THE GUILTY (1947) may be low budget, but cinematographer Henry Sharp still does some nice work. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

A number of shots in THE GUILTY (1947) frame action through doors + windows, from a remove. Considering the story is told in flashback, and considering who tells it, I'd like to think these are clues to the unreliable nature of the narrator. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty #filmsky

In Woolrich’s original story, Tremholt was indeed the murderer! His relationship with Estelle was more defined and some details - like the paint colors Jake used when he was painting the incinerator chute, figured prominently in identifying Tremholt as the killer. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

In that final shot, we see Estelle walking down "the old street" from above, just like Linda would have on the night of the murder when Dixon claimed he watched her from the balcony. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Psych!!! You can’t always trust the noir voiceover! Carr as the unreliable narrator is such a great twist - unique to the film. As they put it in the Film Noir Foundation extras, that twist “out-Woolriched Woolrich.” Bravo to screenwriter Presnell. #TheNoirCollective

A little love for Dixon: Born Oswaldo Castellano in Sicily, Wally Cassell appeared in a number of noirs, probably most famous for White Heat (1949). He married actress Marcy (😊) McGuire in 1947. They were together until Cassell’s death in 2015 at age 103! #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Estelle’s lewk is oddly glam for a grieving sister and very out of place at McGinnis’s. And this is the second time that Carr has asked her, point blank, where she’s been and with whom. She evades his questions each time. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

“If we could only go back. Go back where we started. Linda alive again...nice and clean.” Estelle’s view of what life was like before the murder is a little divorced from reality, no? #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Heller’s description of the murder is absolutely chilling. In Woolrich's original it's actually far more detailed and graphic, if you can believe that. And throughout the scene the open drawer with Linda's body in it is always looming between Heller and Carr. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Again, you don’t need a big budget to set the mood. Changing the POV, Dixon’s blurry vision perfectly illustrates his paranoia and desperation, and what his “spells” must be like. “I’m gonna crack up all the way, just like I did the first time.” #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Love this shot. If you thought the sets for this film felt deliberately rundown, how about an overhead shot of the bathroom?? The change in POV highlights how shabby this world is and makes Carr look like a rat in a cage. #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty

Dixon’s PTSD wasn’t in Woolrich’s original 1941 story. But shell-shocked vets as tortured souls appear frequently in post-war film noir. “I guess that’s the way it is with guys who’ve been in the war together. We put up with a lot of things without knowing why.” #TheNoirCollective #TheGuilty
