A general context view of the rocky dust covered terrain - there are many scattered lumps of 'speckled' rock in various states of partial erosion plus some dark rocks showing no speckles at all.

A very eroded example of a 'speckled' rock which is absolutely riddled with tiny holes and cavities.

A much larger example of 'speckly' rock that has had a circular abrasion ground into it. The dark colour is apparently remnants of a resilient purplish coating, the white rock underneath is highly reflective and looks mineral crystalline, like milky quartz.

A dark cloud by JWST🔭, NIRCam, name and credits quoted. Alt-Text by chatGPT captured the fact that "reddish-orange sources and patches are embedded within". The stars are redder because the dark dust serves as a filter, allowing longer wavelengths through.

$chatGPT: dark molecular cloud G28.333+0.063, set against an exceptionally dense stellar field in the Milky Way. Thousands of stars fill the image, ranging from tiny points to brilliant stars with prominent diffraction spikes. Much of the cloud is visible as a broad, dark, relatively star-poor region toward the center, where dense dust obscures the stars behind it. Numerous faint reddish-orange sources and patches are embedded within or seen through the cloud, while a brighter, compact region of orange and red nebulosity appears on the right side, associated with active star formation. Wisps of diffuse emission and darker dust structures extend across the lower part of the image. The striking contrast between the crowded background and the dark obscuring cloud reveals how dense interstellar dust blocks the light of the Galactic stellar population behind it$
