Had a beautiful time again at this year's Denver Zine Fest! Here are some pics of me and my table set up. I'll post again soon with all the goodies I traded for and bought from the other artists who I met <3
Here I am standing behind my Zine Fest table. I'm wearing a blue face mask and a purple tshirt. My tablecloth is a dark purple with embroidered signage safety pinned to the front which say "Jackie Maessen Art" and include my sign language "I Love You" logo. On the table is my big green cardboard zine display with four rows of different sized zines on them. Below that is an array of collage bookmarks I designed and had printed at a local shop. Here is how my table looked before I set up my display on it. It's a light yellowish wood tabletop. On it, the volunteer event organizers placed a few flyers: Flyer 01 is a large orange poster with the Denver Zine Fest 2026 dinosaur artwork, general information, and sponsor logos. Flyer 02 is an agenda for the day's event. And Flyer 03 is a little exhibitor place card with my name on it!This year, my back was to a wall, so I had a really great view of almost the entire event space! Here, I took a picture of what I saw that day. The room has really cool perforated textures on the white wavy ceiling and wooden zig zag wall panels. Across the room straight ahead of me is a wall of windows that look out onto a sunny park view. And filling the room are several rows of vendors and customers. I've done some very fancy Microsoft Paint magic and added rainbow colored hearts over any faces that were exposed because I didn't get anyone's permission for sharing their images on my feed.

Hey, kid - It is *never* a bother when you reach out for help. It's actually an honor to support you. And I'm proud you're asking for a hand. Don't let that brain trick you into thinking you're a burden. Impossible! You bring me joy, even on your shittiest days. Love you! - An NB ND Auntie
In this picture, Jackie, a slender white nonbinary guy with dirty blonde crew cut (I guess) is smiling and holding their hand in the sign language "I love you" shape. They have a black tshirt on with "You cannot erase us" printed on the chest in rainbow colors. Their grumpy cat, Gesso, a 14-ish year old norwegian forest cat for the pet lovers, is in the bottom right corner of the picture, looking back towards the camera.

Y'all. I recently read Jacque Aye's newest book "Tuesday's Blues." It's spooky and sexy and queer and *GOOOOOD*. And it means the world to read fiction by a fellow autistic. Go support her work, join her mailing list, and buy her books!
I took this selfie in front of the lavender ditsy floral printed curtain covering my art supply cabinet. I'm a small-ish white nonbinary dude wearing a blue baseball cap, blue glasses, pink ear buds, a grey tshirt that says "neurodivergent" in rainbow colors, a silver necklace, and a black watch. Most importantly, I'm holding up my hardback copy of the wonderful book "Tuesday's Blues" by Jacque Aye!

Alt: This is a gif of Will Ferrell playing his Buddy the Elf character. In this scene, he's in his green elf outfit from the north pole - pointy hat and fur collar and all. He's doing a small happy dance. He's in a kitchen with white cabinetry. And you can see some of his decorations behind him - white paper snowflakes and string lights.

Guess who's *CRAMPIIIING* Check out my silly little zine called "Bitch Fest: I Hate Menstruating." Here is the front cover and one of the spreads from inside. Also here's my dog. In these pictures, she's destroying her koala toy and then resting with it, respectively. I feel so seen. 😡 😭 😴
In the foreground of this picture, I'm holding a mini zine that's got black lace with white grid paper squares collaged on top which read "Bitch Fest: I Hate Menstruating" and "I don't have energy for a silver lining. Only complaints ahead <3"

In the background of the picture, my white dog with brown speckles is laying on a dusty rose colored mattress and ripping her koala toy apart with her teeth. This picture shows me holding the mini zine open to a spread on the inside. Both pages are black and white.

The left hand page has two text blocks in my handwriting: The top one says, "Heightened Senses: My skin feels extra tender. My eyes are more sensitive to lights. I swear my body odor changes / worsens, or my nose gets better." The one on the bottom of the page reads, "Fatigue: Shit's exhausting!"

The right hand page also has two text blocks: The first says, "The mood swings... Before I start bleeding are just brutal (asterisk)." And the second says, "(Asterisk) Well, I guess that's a kind of win - The psychological pain stops when I bleed & then the physical pain takes over. Silver lining?! Ugh."

Behind my hand and the zine, my dog is resting on the mattress with her head next to the koala that she just shook the shit out of and chewed on. She looks so sweet and peaceful in this photo.

Here's a peek at the completed #perzine "Invisibility of Spouse"! I started writing this about a year ago. It tracks my experience with people reacting to the use of the word "spouse" outside of legal circumstances to refer to married partners in a gender neutral way.
A piece of paper with the text "THE INVISIBILITY OF SPOUSE" written out in cutout pieces of letters from magazine pages.Page of text with a collage in the middle featuring two light-skinned people whose faces are whited out.Zine example text, where the left page has a collage in the middle with an upside down pink triangle behind an upside down white triangle pasted over it. On the righthand page is a collage of a person in a fluffy coat leaning against a wall, but their face is whited out.

I attended a flower crown workshop at the Denver Botanic Gardens during the Lavender Festival. Then I played around with self portraits. I had a lot of fun with both! 🥰 📸 🪻 👑
This image shows a small white nonbinary guy with short dirty blonde hair. They are wearing dark blue plastic framed eyeglasses, a hot pink button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and grey speckled biker shorts. On their head is a flower crown made of white baby's breath, lavender sprigs, and tied with a white ribbon on the side of their head. They're folded up into a cozy pretzel shape - Yep, they are usually twisting themselves into some kind of knot for sensory support. They are seated on a dark green couch with blue textured pillows on either side of them and a purple cloth draped behind them as a backdrop.

Lately I've been on a role making zines to talk with dead people! Little notes for loved ones past. Some mundane topics and some questions or musings. Here's a glimpse into the first ones - for my big brother and for my gramma.
In this photo, there are two colorful zines resting on a scrapbooking page filled with blue sky and white clouds. The bigger of the two zines has a messy collage style - Lined paper, stickers, a game of tic-tac-toe, and the mesh wrapper from a bag of oranges are scattered across the cover. The handwritten title reads, "Bobby! These remind me of you. - Little sis <3" To the right of this big zine, the smaller of the two zines is also collaged, but in a much tidier and calmer way. The background of this cover is an upside down photograph of lavender blooms. The text collaged on top says, "Gramma - Random stuff I'd like to talk about since you died."This image shows page 02 of the zine to my big brother resting on the same sky background page. There is handwritten text filling up a lined sheet of notebook paper. The text at the top is orange and it reads, "Our youngest nephew has your mischievous grin & bright eyes. The oldest is equally as locked into music and dancing as you were." Below this, in the middle of the page, I wrote, "Squirrels, squirrels, squirrels - Ya goofball" in lime green pen. Next to this I put a colorful acorn sticker. And on the bottom of the page is a purple paragraph which says, "Lasagna - I wonder if you'd like the tweaks I've made to mom's recipe over the years - I use turkey instead of beef, I'll shred a zucchini to mix into the meat sauce, and I use shell or spiral noodles instead of lasagna noodles."This picture shows the zine for my gramma opened to pages 08 and 09. It is also resting on the sky background page. Page 08 has a green and pink garden background taken from a photo in a magazine. The text is written in black ink and reads, "I have more meat on my bones now. I've been exercising. Strength feels good." And below this, "Decoupage is awesome. Would've been cool to do some projects with you." On page 09, the background is a completed word search about plants. The text layered on top says, "What did you think of your dad's job as a logger?"

Y'all! My vendor application for Denver Zine Fest 2026 was accepted! 🥰 🕺 🔥 Come and join me and a whole lot of other talented artists and zinesters this September! Details in the poster below by Blake A. Chamness.
This is an awesome poster designed by Blake A. Chamness!

The background is a muted red-orange. The ombre yellow/blue/grey block text at the top of the page says "Denver Zine Fest 2026." Below that in yellow, the subtitle includes the date and time: "Sunday, Sept 13, 11am - 5pm." And the black sub-sub-title below this shares the location: "Denver Public Library: Central / 10 West 14th Ave Pkwy."

The image that dominates the page is an illustration of a big ole dinosaur (what I think is a stegosaurus for the dinophiles out there) standing on their back legs, wearing a light blue tshirt, blue shorts, and a backwards baseball cap. They are grinning real big and holding a zine in one hand, a canvas bag of more zines slung across the other arm, and their tail spikes are skewering an accordion-folded mini zine.

Recent sketches of some of my favorite fidgets in prismacolor pencil and marker / ink pen 😊 ✍🏻 👽 🎨
In this image, my hand holds my sketchbook open to a page with three drawings of colorful fidget toys. From the top left and moving clockwise there's a blue koosh ball, then an ombre yellow-orange-pink popper toy, then a teal green stress ball with six mini balls branching from its equator. Surrounding each of the fidget drawings are scribbles from the colored pencils used to make the illustration and handwritten text with details about that writing utensil, so I can refer back to it and recreate that color magic in future drawings.

I'm new to the world of prismacolor pencils, and I'm hooked. They're a tool I could spend a lifetime with - blending, playing, learning! Here are sketchbook pages I made to prep for drawings of dark skies and characters with a variety of skin tones. I find these color study pages so satisfying!
This sketchbook page shows several swatches of layered colored pencil scribbles. Each one has smaller single color swatches next to it - Lavender, Dark Blues, Dark Browns. Each small patch is labeled with the Prismacolor name and code. An arrow is next to each swatch grouping to show me the sequence of colors I layered. This way, I can refer back to this color study page later. My goal with this page is to test out various color combinations in preparation for some drawings of dark skies. This page serves the same function as the Dark Sky Swatch page just before it. There are many swatches of layered colored pencils with smaller individual colors surrounding them. The colors on this page - Pastel Olive Green, Peach, Pinks, Warm Browns, Cool Browns, Neutral Browns. These are to help me study in preparation for character drawings with a variety of skin tones.

More sketchbook scribbles from yesterday! :) With these, I took more of a loose art therapy approach to help me process big stories and feelings. It worked its magic and I felt so much better after <3 Orange & pink page: Crayons. Green & brown page: Prismacolor pencils & PaperMate felt-tip pen.
This sketchbook page is filled with abstract crayon scribbles. Oranges and pinks swirl and zig zag across the page in a tangled mess. On the right hand side of the page, I've written vertically in pink felt-tip pen "Blew a fuse."This sketchbook page is dominated by a large green orb hovering in the top center. It's made of many layers of squiggles in a variety of green shades. Below the green circle, there is small text which I wrote in brown felt-tip pen. Initially, I wrote this to purge the flurry of thoughts whipping through my mind. And after stepping back, I realize it makes an interesting poem of sorts.

The text reads "Calm / Forest / Womb / Moon / Clearing / Woods / Nest / Fear / Safety / Radiant / Enveloped / Trees / Thinking / Nasty / Cruel / Worthy / Question / Competition / Pain / Control / Soft / Quiet / Nature / Muppet / Embrace / Sore Shoulder / Rhythm / Loss / Burst / Warm / Protection / Soothing / Calm / Gramma / Green /l Lush / Wind / Birds / Water / Leaves / How / Regardless / Certain / Ready."

Went to a social event with fellow autistic peeps today and had a great time! It was a really positive energy zap to be with my neurotribe in person. During the hangout and after, I've been on a roll filling sketchbook pages with collage and stimmy lines 🩷 #Collage #Autistic #SundayScribbles
In this image, my wooden desktop is a tornado of creativity. My sketchbook shows a page with collage play on it, including floral cutouts, multi-colored geometric shapes, squiggly lines drawn in purple, green, and brown colored pencil. Around the sketchbook are scrap pages from magazine, scissors, pencils, a sharpener, jars with markers in them, a notecard, a key, a rock, and my laptop. Signs of an evening well spent for this artist.

I'm opening an art shop to hopefully craft a better life and a better living for myself. I'm neurodivergent. The burnout cycle is painful. I want to create sustainable work, sustainable methods for me to contribute to my community, sustainable ways to build security for my family. ❤️
My hand rests on a wooden table at the corner of a collage I made in 2020. This piece has a variety of brown textures in the background - A cliff face which I cut out from a magazine; And a picture I took of boiling milk that formed a leopard print-like pattern in the pot. These two images have been manually cut and pasted onto each other and then digitally repeated to create a background of quadrants for this design. Where the four cliff faces converge in the middle of the page, a large yellow daisy rests while a bee crawls on its central florets. Scattered around the daisy are flowers of various sizes, some a royal purple and some a soft lavender color.

This is my zine "Uncured: Love Notes for Autistics." 👽 I made this… For the part of me that hid my needs for so long, even from myself. To give my shame and RFK, Jr. the *middle finger*. To provide myself assurances and cheerleading. Also, here is my cat, Gesso. 🐱 ♥️ #autistic #zinester #pride
In this picture, I - a slender white nonbinary dude with a dirty blonde pixie cut - am holding up an 8.5 x 11 inch zine called "Uncured: Love Notes for Autistics." I'm wearing blue rimmed glasses, red tshirt, and two silver necklaces. My nails are painted black. The zine has a white cover with multicolored text cut out from magazines and packaging in a ransom note style. There are also stickers of a hot dog and slice of pepperoni pizza next to the title. Behind me is a white wall with string lights pinned up and several pieces of art, including photographs of the moon, a jigsaw puzzle of a brunette girl surrounded by lush green plants and staring into the night sky, a dream catcher, a pink mushroom sculpture, and four-leaf clovers. In this image, my hand is holding the zine open to a spread so you can see the first and second pages inside. The zine is resting on a large paper background printed with blue sky and white clouds. There's multicolored confetti and googly eyes scattered around the zine.

The first page has handwritten notecards on it, held down with checkered washi tape and collaged with stickers and doodles.

The notecards read "Note from Jackie, Saturday 2025.05.10 - I'm making this zine for 03 reasons...

01: Because I've fallen in love with the Autistic community. We bring countless gifts into the world. Our fortitude, resilience, sensitivity, clarity, care; We refuse to "let it go," to shut up for the sake of comfort; We challenge. We are messy & gorgeous.

02: Because I've recently realized new levels of anger, fear, & resolution. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. the current U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services, is trying to launch a directory of autistics and research into the cause of autism. Whether it's misguided or hateful, this initiative is ableist, dangerous, and rooted in eugenics.

03: Because, when I was throwing away the pepperoni packaging, I was struck by the label "uncured." I thought it was a cool, corny description for me, for us - the neurodivergents who know that we don't need a cure, we need supports. *I hope this will offer helpful reminders & encouragements to my neurotribe. I love you.*

The second page reads "We need you in the world." The text has been collaged from magazine cutouts in a ransom note style. The words are collaged on top of a photo of a twig with green leaves on it. This picture is taken looking downwards at my bed which is covered in a multicolored quilt and a crocheted burgundy weighted blanket. I'm wearing floral print pants. My cat - a Norwegian Forest Cat (we think) - is laying down curled up against my leg and looking back towards me with his long old man whiskers and gorgeous golden eyes. And the "Uncured" zine is on the bed next to us.

A thin, white handkerchief fills most of the image. It is resting on a brown tabletop. The handkerchief is hand-embroidered with black embroidery floss which reads "Protect the dolls." On either side of this message, there are outlines of hearts in red thread. And on top of the finished project, a needle is resting, with red embroidery floss threaded through the eye.

One of the reasons I make art is to connect with loved ones past. Today I want to shout out my paternal grandparents, Rose and Robert Maessen. Gramma made decoupage decor, taught me to crochet, hunted patiently for four-leaf clovers. Grampa made drawings in Microsoft Paint, taught me...
This photo shows my hand holding a small white paper booklet that my Grampa Maessen made for me. It has text on the cover in handwritten pencil which reads "This is a short story about a little pet on T.V." Below the title, there is a small sketch of a television set with a turtle and snail on the screen. On the carpeted floor beneath my hand is the clear acrylic plastic case that I store the booklet inside and a stopwatch which also belonged to my Grampa. This image shows a set of two dried four-leaf clovers that my Gramma taped to a piece of paper to save for me. They are inside a blonde wooden picture frame that I've hung on my wall. In this picture, my hand is in the bottom left corner holding a small pastel book in the center of the frame. The title is "To Walk In Stardust: A Selection Of Writings For Those Who Dream," by Flavia. Above the title and author's name, there is a watercolor and pen illustration of a kite with stars along the string. This book was a gift to me from my Gramma.

This picture shows my hand holding a light blue jean jacket with two additions on the back: Along the bottom hem, there is black and red machine embroidery by my big sister which shows a woman in a fancy dress strutting through a field of flowers; And above this embroidery, across the shoulders of the jacket, there is a large white patch with red lettering and black trim; The patch reads "Zines started with the Harlem Renaissance" and was cut out from a tshirt I bought from the artist and fellow zinester Breanna Upton, aka @BrattyxBre on YouTube.

Hey, y'all! Here is a sneak peek at one of the zines that will soon be available for purchase in my online shop! This one is called "No Sweat: A boring story about my anxiety meds working." I feel really proud of this one. #NeuroDivergent #NeuroSpicy #Anxiety #Zinester #Zine #SmallBusiness #ArtShop
This picture shows my hand holding the zine "No Sweat: A boring story about my anxiety meds working." The cover has a white background, pink and tan paper cutouts, hearts, and flair. The title and author's name are included on the cover in ransom note style paper cutouts from magazines. And the subtitle is handwritten in purple felt tip pen. Behind the zine and bordering the photo, my blue jeans and multi-colored shirt are visible. This photo shows my hand holding the zine open to a spread.

On the left-hand page, the background consists of blue paper cutouts. And I've included a picture of my dog with a yellow-orange paper border around it. The text is a black font on white paper strips and it reads "I realized something on my dogwalk yesterday. This is my dog, Belle. Isn't she the cutest?!"

On the right-hand page, there is a gold paper background with delicate black tree branches and pink and white blossoms. The paper cutouts with text on this page read "We stopped to say hi to a neighbor and her dog. When we walked away, I was quietly struck by how comfortable I felt... More specifically, MY ARMPITS WERE DRY. Okay, let me break down why this is such a big deal."

You deserve to be celebrated all year round! 🩵🤍🩷🤟🏻 Period! Love, An NB ND Auntie #TDOV #ProtectTheDolls #TransRights #Queerdo
A small-ish white nonbinary dude. They have dirty blonde hair in a pixie cut, blue framed glasses, and a burgundy quarter zip sweater on. They have a slight smile and are waving their hand at the camera in the shape of the "I Love You" sign. Behind them is the messy bookshelf which houses a bunch of their art and zine making supplies.

🩷🤍🩵🤟🏻 HAPPY TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY!! 🤟🏻🩵🤍🩷 Here's one of the collages I finished up yesterday to celebrate. If you wanna learn more about what Trans Day of Visibility is all about, check out this brief but thorough run-down on GLAAD's website. Happy learning! #Pride #TransRights #ProtectTheDolls
I took this photo looking downward at my coffee table. The focus of the image is a collage of many strips of white, light pink, and light blue papers bursting out in concentric circles to resemble a trans pride firework of sorts. Scattered throughout the collage are little hearts in various shades of white, pink, blue, and also black for additional contrast. Starting at the bottom and moving clockwise around the edges of the photo, you can see my feet, a cushion, tape, a water bottle, scrap papers, a stapler, and a pair of scissors.

Consider this: In a nation with a population approaching 349 million, the participation of 8 million people means that more than one of every 50 U.S. residents joined a No Kings rally. Stat seen on @usatoday.com
1 out of every 50 people in the U.S. attended a No Kings protest

It's been a damn good weekend. That's all :) #Spring #NoKings #SundayScribbles
This photo was taken looking up at a tree with soft pink blooms on it - I believe a crabapple, but don't quote me on that. Behind the branches, there is a bright blue mid-day sky. This photo was taken looking down at my fold-up table and messy carpeted floor, both of which are scattered with cardboard, writing utensils, and paint supplies. In the middle of the photo are two finished protest signs with the "no kings" icon painted on them in black - This contains the outline of a crown with a circle around it and an X painted through it. This picture shows some stuff sitting on my carpeted floor. On the left is my hard blue plastic pencil case with a bunch of markers, pencils, and crayons in it. On the right is a lined notebook opened to a page with squiggly abstract line drawings on it. And on the notebook sit a silver metal slinky toy and my dark blue plastic framed glasses.

I visited my hometown last week - St. Louis, Missouri. While there, I went to the Metro Trans Umbrella Group and felt so relieved, excited, seen, and at-home in that space! 🤟 🏳️‍⚧️ If you are LGBTQ+ and in (or near) StL, please visit this community space. It's beautiful. #pride

An Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag Collage 🏳️‍🌈 and a Neighborhood Love Sign 🫶 that I recently finished up! These are the originals/masters. Now I just need to sort out print shop details so I can make these available for my online shop and *finally* hang them in my own home. So excited!
This photo was taken looking downward at my wooden desk where some art supplies surround the finished original artwork - An intersex inclusive progress pride flag with each color element collaged from magazine cutouts, photos, art paper, and cardstock. The yellow triangle shape at the top includes a printed art paper gifted to me by my sister and a cutout of a yellow daisy. Instead of the purple circle which is usually in this flag design, I have cut out a purple heart outline to rest in the center of the yellow triangle, overlapping the daisy petals. The waterfall of triangles below this are white, baby pink, and baby blue which represent the trans pride flag, followed by the brown and black colors which emphasize the experiences of LGBTQ+ people of color. From these cascading arrows, the six colors of the rainbow pride flag fall downward in vertical stripes. From right to left: Red roses, orange concrete wall, yellow lemons and a flower, green plants and aquatic life, blue water and sky and a school of fish, purple pansies. Despite my best efforts to keep them out of the photo, my pasty white legs and one of my feet are in the bottom left corner of this picture. Ha! This photo is also taken looking downward at my wooden desk. On the desk is a finished original artwork - This is a narrow white page with black handwritten text and dark collaged elements. From top to bottom, the piece includes: A wavy black line cut from a magazine; A phrase written in sharpie - Amamos nuestro vecindario; Five little black and dark colored hearts cut out of cardstock and magazines; A phrase written in sharpie - We love our neighborhood; Another wavy black line cut from a magazine.

Worked on a mixed media moon study last night. While it was in progress, before I adhered the moon itself, I realized that it looks like such a happy little void! Made me chuckle 🤭
A small piece of watercolor paper rests on a cook book near colored pencils. On the paper, an in progress multi-media piece can be seen. A dark grey-blue watercolor wash covers the background. In the center of the page, concentric circles of pastel yellow, light orange, and white-silver colored pencil blend into each other. In the middle of these concentric circles, there is a gap left in the shape of a semi-circle, so that the dark watercolor wash shows through. Because of this gap, the circles in the sky resemble a smiling emoji sans eyes, hence the "happy little void" mentioned above. Here is a picture of the colored pencils I used for this mixed media piece, and cotton swabs used for blending, all of which are resting on a dusty coral colored mattress. The colored pencils are prismacolor brand: Cream PC914, Burnt Ochre PC943, 50% Warm Grey PC1054, Lemon Yellow PC915, Silver PC949, Violet Blue PC933, Orange PC918. The qtips have colored pencil on them from being used as blenders. This is an image of my hand holding the finished mixed media piece "Waxing moon with glow rings." In the background of the image, you can see the colored pencils scattered around, the cookbook that I used as a drawing surface, and the mattress that I'm sitting on. In the artwork I'm holding up, there is a gold paper cut out in the shape of a semi-circular waxing moon, surrounded by blended concentric rings of yellow, orange, and soft white glow, all set in the middle of a dark grey-blue watercolor sky. The watercolor paper I'm holding has a border which has been left white, much like a polaroid image, and the title, my artist signature, and the date are written by hand in pink felt-tip pen at the bottom of the page in the white border.

My dog, Belle, helping with inventory management! Here we are organizing junk packs for my online shop. She's the best helper! 🥰 🐾 🎨
A white medium-sized dog is in a sunny bedroom, laying on a carpeted floor, facing the camera. Along the wall behind the dog, there is framed art resting on the floor against a window and a bookshelf which is filled with art supplies. Surrounding the dog, there are organized stacks of colorful papers on the floor and cardboard boxes filled with gift wrap, envelopes, and other art materials.
