Exchangeable, sure. But sharpened to a point at what social scientists mainly need? Not so much. Given typical backgrounds of these students and time available, teaching deep coding hard. I've seen SS students at elite unis recoil from anything technical. That said, I'm hugely pro the gist of idea

Jack Cunliffe @jackdc.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
Hmmm. Can see what your saying. But python more about data retrieval and wrangling, less about analysis. To my mind a social scientist is about interpretation and explanation, and that leans more on analysis than data per se.

Nar. The types of job the avg social science UG student gets first needs good excel skills, still. We're doing them disservice teaching them any coding. We should teach them how to use Office well. Data scientists, in general, don't come from the social sciences.

I can absolutely get behind all of this. Quite a big political shift though. Can demonstrate UBI is functional all we want, but that shift will be the hard bit, and flies in the face of pretty much everything since Thatcher

Jack Cunliffe @jackdc.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
Feel that that level governmental oversight and the political changes it will require are the main barriers, not a handful of isolated studies that show it 'works' in various local settings not being accepted
100
Jack Cunliffe @jackdc.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
I feel I should support UBI but no one seems to answer the question of what happens to the price of inelastic things, lke rent and housing. Surely prices just go up to eat the UBI everyone has? Only answer seems to be strong (government) price controls.

Prohibitive policies drove organised crime in Australia 100 years ago. It’s happening again
Where there’s demand, there will be supply, legal or not. From the ‘sly grog’ of the 1920s to the illicit vapes of today, getting regulation right is difficult.
