I have a new article out in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion about “History, Atheism, and Race.” It's not open access but if you would like a PDF, let me know...
History, Atheism, and Race
Nathan G Alexander

At first glance, there is little connection between atheism and race. Examining the demographics of atheists, however, it can be seen that, historically, most atheists have been white. While in recent years, the demographics of atheists have shifted to more closely match the population as a whole, this observation nonetheless remains true. This does not mean there have not been nonwhite atheists. In fact, there is a long history of Black atheism, which is somewhat unique from white atheism, given that it was forged in the history of resistance to slavery and racial oppression. Paying attention to the racial identities of atheists can help the varieties of atheism to be seen more clearly. There is no “orthodox” atheist authority, but atheism does intersect with racial thought when it comes to questions of science and politics. Racial classifications emerged as part of an Enlightenment science that sought to break away from Christian views of humans as distinct from nature, but these racial classifications existed uneasily alongside proclamations of the natural equality of all humans. A related debate over monogenesis and polygenesis—that is, did human races come from one origin or many?—directly concerned the truth of Christianity, yet atheists found themselves on both sides of this question for different reasons. The theories of Charles Darwin seemed to show that all humans, and indeed all species, came from a single origin, yet different readings of Darwin persisted, with some justifying racial equality and others challenging it. In the political realm, particularly concerning questions of the legitimacy of imperialism, atheists were likewise divided. Some believed in the possibility of secular progress and the necessity of imperialism, while others advocated for the rights of colonized people. When considering the intellectual content of atheism, then, a number of complex connections with racial thought can be seen.
