Hamilakis challenges archaeology's "visual bias." Ancient religion was a fully embodied experience. The smell of incense, the acoustics of a cave, and the physical effort of a pilgrimage were essential for creating deep emotional responses and collective memories. 🌿🔥

Before Scully, temples were studied as isolated art objects. Scully radically shifted the paradigm: he argued that temples were built to interact with the sacred landscape of the earth. The place itself was the original monument. ⛰️🏛️
