Yes, I've been fast tracked through border controls at Paris and Brussels when running late

Plans have been unveiled for a network of cycle routes linking nearby towns and villages to Oxford, backed by county and city councils – and unusually, the University of Oxford. The Oxford Greenways would connect 200,000 residents to the city on traffic-free paths. oxfordclarion.uk/oxford-green...

Oxford Greenways: a cure for congestion?
How far would you be prepared to cycle to work? Research suggests that, for most people, 2 to 5 miles is the sweet spot. That's 10 to 30 minutes each way. Enough for health benefits, but not too tiri...

That is a great document but it focuses on urban areas where it is viable and desirable to have both on-road routes, and quieter routes through parks. You seem be saying we simply can't have rural walking and cycling routes without the supervision (and danger, noise, etc) of motorists.

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I don't doubt that but on a rural cycle route between villages who is doing the overlooking? A motorists speeding past at 50mph isn't going know someone is trouble. By enabling people to walk and cycle in safely there will much more human contact and interaction.

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Why are you assuming there wont be the presence of other people using these routes though? These paths will become thronged with people once the network enables people to transform how they travel.

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Does that mean we can't have any rural cycle routes away from motor traffic?

The term "Greenway" is just a marketing buzzword for this project, almost all of the routes will be along roads. Those that aren't will be making existing bridleways and canal towpaths more accessible.

Same reason why the Elizabeth line can't ever have level boarding outside of the core. And some of the recent Overground, SWR, Greater Anglia, C2C and West Midlands trains will probably get scrapped with decades of life left in them because they were designed to be inaccessible.

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
We already have then in the class 755s, though they were only specced for 100mph

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
No, they bought trains where the floor level is too high because that's all Derby would make. Can't be fixed without scrapping the trains and buying new.

J. Ackley @j-ackley.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The trains will have gap fillers to bridge the gap on curved platforms as seen on Greater Anglia's level boarding trains.

Why zero emissions rather than congestion charge? With more and more cars becoming ZE, it would become less and less effective over time.

A similar principle, connecting regional rail lines across a city with a new tunnel. But GTX will have much wider stop spacings and higher speeds, focused more on travel across the region rather than journeys to the CBD.

This reminds me a lot of cars, another technology that is convenient when a small number of people use them, but not when everyone does.

Thameslink provides 24/7 service from Gatwick to Bedford and a decent service to Peterborough, that makes it much more convenient to get to than Heathrow.

Which of Gatwick or Heathrow should be London's hub airport, a debate on which one side you have: Gatwick has more land that it owns, is cheaper, already has direct rail links to the South outside London, is less a logistical nightmare versus Heathrow is older

If you live anywhere near the Midland or East Coast mainlines much easier to get to Gatwick as they have direct trains. Bedford even gets a 24 hour a day service!

Compared to the terrain that Spain, France, Korea, Japan, etc have built their high speed networks through, the home counties are like a pancake. It's pure politics and policy that make it difficult, the technical side has been solved a thousand times over.

England is in no way exceptional in that regard, it is actually unusual in being on an island that limited mixing. You can say the same of a Hungarian, a Pashtun or a Cherokee, they are the product of every person who has wondered through their land and the land those people wandered through.

And cars don't work for a lot of people either, whether they be too young or too old, too poor or just don't want one. What's your point? Every extra car on the road makes every other person's journey worse.

Yes, but regulars learn it's quicker to pop outside for a second than to follow the signs through the tunnels. Although it depends on the line and which route you end up taking. The 3D maps of the tunnels are great so you can learn which signs to ignore.

Good point about rushing through, I had been using them for years before I ever saw what the facades look like. King's Cross sends you outside when transfering from tube to train which forces you to see it in all it's majesty.

The route under the Botley railway bridge has fully opened, so I went down to see how the walking and cycling provision works. Summary: the route under the railway bridge is pretty good, the transitions on either side are terrible for cycling (and not that good for walking).

Chiltern was basically the perfect case during privatisation. - Almost entirely running on exclusive trackage so other operators problems didn't cascade - Some London commuter services for stable revenue - Ability to complete with larger operators for services from London to Oxford and Birmingham

In Andalusia, can't remember which stations, they had some air-conditioned waiting rooms but you had to leave them 15 mins before the train arrived to get through the stupid security theatre.

Is it possible to air condition a railway station? Unless it's a metro with platform edge doors and fully enclosed platforms.
