A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

@peturdainn I'm just guessing, but: 1. release 2.1 2. release 2.2, ...., 2.8 3. find bug in 2.1 which is not present in 2.8 4. fix bug and maintenance release 2.1.1 is a scenario where 2.1.1 is newer than 2.8 if you only look at the release date. But it's not necessarily the "latest" software […]

@Ali afaict someone was hit by a falling rock while doing a via ferrata and was injured. They sued both the owner of the land and the climbing federation that put up the vf. Judge ruled that neither of them was responsible and that climbers/hikers take on their own risk.

My final hike in the #dolomites yesterday: linking #viaferrata Roda del Vael and Masaré. And now it’s sadly time to return home. More details in the alt text.

A rainy day today in the #dolomites . So here are some pictures I took yesterday while having fun on the #ViaFerrata Oscar Schuster.
RIfugio Zallinger with its beautiful little white chapel. And the Catenaccio / Rosengarten in the background.A ragged rockface rising up against a blue sky. Multiple people wearing helmets are following the via ferrata to the top.View on the inner "valley" between Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto, from high up the via ferrata.

Didn't get a lot of pictures while #climbing in Les Écrins last week, unfortunately. The climbing was nice. I just wish the weather would have allowed for more of it.
A lightly overhanging rock face in profile. Behind the rock there pine trees and a blue sky with some white clouds. A climber is hanging on with two arms and one leg. The other leg is dangling down.A cute Border Collie sleeping in front of a rock cliff. A climbing rope with some carabiners is used to tie him to a tree. In the background a belayer and a climber are trying a hard route.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Image: In a childrens library, a small boy contentedly reads a small picture book, while an angry-looking small girl storms past, carrying a very heavy book.

Unfortunately for Charlotte, the adjudication committee decides that, for the purposes of the under-nines summer reading challenge, the six volumes of proust's 'in search of lost time' is considered to be one single narrative, whereas each of Roger hargreaves' mister men' books is a distinct work, thereby awarding the library's 'top reader' sticker to her brother Toby.
