There are not alternatives available, unfortunately, when it comes to meaningful, relevant testing of efficacy and safety of pharmaceuticals. Other mammals have complex systems similar to humans to varying degrees. HOWEVER, standards of humane treatment could be more rigorously taught and enforced.
