Trump-Zelenskyy clash marks a defining turn away from U.S. defense of democracies
Analysis: The confrontation revealed Trump’s deep impatience with Ukraine and its democratically elected president, and his persistent defense of Russia’s autocratic ruler

Most Americans don’t know how federal agencies like the CFPB, USAID, & the Dept. of Education work – and that's the point. It’s a sign of a healthy, working government providing support that we have largely taken for granted. Fmr. Education Sec. @arneduncan.bsky.social joins me at 11a ET on #Velshi

Donald the Conqueror? President Trump has set his sights on territorial expansion since returning to office, from Panama to Canada to Greenland. But if Canada were to actually join the U.S., our northern neighbors would garner a lot more political power than Trump may think. #Velshi

Just two senators? If Trump wants Canada to join the U.S., it’s going take a lot more
Donald Trump’s expansionist vision since returning to office has been rebutted by leaders of Panama, Greenland and Canada. But if his vision of Canada as the 51st state were to become reality, there’s a chance the president wouldn’t be too happy with the results.

‘Potentially devastating’: gutting of federal workforce hits Black America hardest
Federal data shows that Black Americans, who have historically found greater equity in the public sector compared to the private sector, will disproportionately bear the brunt of Trump's effort to gut the federal workforce. “These forms of employment in service to the nation were actually one of the few areas that Black people could rely upon to enter the middle class. It's potentially devastating, the loss of that sector,” says Harvard professor and best-selling author Imani Perry. This is not the first time it’s been tried by a U.S. President, warns Errin Haines, editor-at-large of The 19th*. “This is why it’s so important to know history… Taking a page right out of Woodrow Wilson’s playbook.”

Vladimir Kara-Murza: U.S. tech companies are ‘acting as accomplices to dictatorships’
Vladimir Kara-Murza knows a thing or two about the dangers of government-sponsored, tech industry-supported censorship. As a Russian opposition activist, he was found guilty of treason for speaking out against Putin’s crackdown on dissidents. And now, in the context of Trump’s government overhaul, U.S. tech companies are “essentially acting as accomplices to dictatorships.” “Those companies that declare their adherence to principles such as the rule of law, respect for human rights, respect for democracy, they have to actually follow these principles, as opposed to helping dictatorships overcome them.”

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have said they’re targeting government waste and fraud, but their first targets in dismantling the federal government are lower-budget agencies that help poor people: USAID, the Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Concerns over Musk’s conflicts of interests grow as he undermines fed. regulators. DOGE has gutted “every aspect of accountability outside of the fed. court system,” says Eric Lipton. Current ethics laws are too “antiquated” to address Musk’s vast entanglements says @kirstengrind.bsky.social #Velshi

How Musk’s Businesses Could Benefit from his work at DOGE
As Elon Musk forges ahead with his work at DOGE and expands his political influence, questions are now mounting over the possible conflicts of interest he and his businesses face. DOGE, which is not an official government body, has targeted dozens of federal agencies–some of which regulate his own companies. They undermine the very systems designed to combat corruption and protect Americans from predatory practices. “Trump dismantled [an] accountability and ethics system that was really built up after Watergate,” notes Eric Lipton, a New York Times investigative reporter who co-authored a recent report outlining Musk’s potential conflicts. “Just about every aspect of accountability outside of the federal court system is gone.” As it stands, there’s currently no system for accountability and ethics monitoring at the federal level, Lipton said. Meanwhile, current conflict-of-interest laws are outdated and ill-equipped to address Musk’s vast business entanglements, according to Kirsten Grind, Lipton’s co-author. “He touches every single agency in some way,” she said.

Velshi Banned Book Club: ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn
On Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary, Nick arrives home to find that Amy has disappeared. There are signs of a struggle, and Nick, the hometown golden boy, quickly becomes the primary suspect – not just to the police but to millions of Americans following the case through the news. Through alternative viewpoints and flashbacks, written as diary entries, we quickly learn that the reality is far more sinister and complex than anyone realizes. That is the plot of “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn. But you probably already know that. “Gone Girl” is a cultural phenomenon, beloved by millions of readers, and a genre-defining text. But despite the novel’s acclaim and literary merit, it has been pulled off of shelves in Florida and Tennessee.
