Responding to requests to study vaccine-autism causation: "We are quite open to investigating anything and everything that could be impacting the development of autism, and this plan closes no door" - Dr. Fogel, chair of #IACC #IACCAugust2026

Fogel arguing that the plan discusses other research "all over the place" - she's right, it does. But it has NO funding targets for it! That's the problem, this whole plan is supposed to be a basis for budget estimate, if you don't put it in the budget it may as well not be there

This is really a summation of issues with this Committee - failing to meaningfully engage with the comments people are making. There is unusual unity among autism advocacy orgs that this plan has structural problems, and IACC's answer is basically "no it doesn't"

Another member (can't see name tag) discussing @autismsciencefd.bsky.social comments - arguing that "nothing in this plan suggests that genetic work should not continue" - except, I guess, for the fact that includes no funding targets for it?

Current commenter is fully supported by Strategic Plan, *except* that the Strategic Plan doesn't specifically identify vaccines as a possible cause of autism. Also notes that plan doesn't sufficiently support spelling to communicate and rapid prompting method as communication modalities

Next public comment discussing how ABA was torture for his son.... because it doesn't address mitochondrial dysfunction, leaky gut, etc. and kids should instead receive stem cell treatment. Says son has gotten genetic testing so there is "no autism gene" and it is instead environmental.

First public comment is discussing the importance of effective communication to her son. Hopes that the IACC will prioritize AAC (would like to note that the Strategic Plan contains NO funding targets for directly researching AAC - as opposed to general research on motor issues)

The #IACC has never been personal. For almost its entire history, autistic people were barely included on it. In 2019, we got Congress to require that three people on the committee be autistic - but that's still very much a minority.

The terms 'non-speaking' and 'minimally speaking' are more useful than 'nonverbal' and 'minimally verbal,' as the latter "may hamper research, practice, & policy efforts aimed at improving the lives of the autistic people who purportedly belong to these groups." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

In the center is a white blob. At the top, red all-caps slanted text reads, "Today in Hell Yes, Research!"

Next, black text reads, "“We should use the terms ‘non-speaking’ or ‘minimally speaking,’ because they are preferred over ‘nonverbal’ and ‘minimally verbal’ by autistic people these terms attempt to describe.”

Next, dark gray all-caps slanted text reads, "Bottema-Beutel, Zisk, Zimmerman, & Yu."

At the bottom, small black text reads, "tinyurl.com/NonSpeakingNotNonVerbal" and "@ThinkingAutism".

I don’t understand where opponents of the Neurodiversity framework even get the idea that we are denying disability. I see myself as sometimes benefiting from the differences my autistic brain generates, and sometimes disabled by those differences. Many things can be true at once. #INSAR2025
