Saw a post in an adoptee group asking "how many times has anyone asked you how it feels to be adopted?" I knew the answer would be 0. But still amazing reading the replies confirming this reality. No one has ever asked me how it feels to be adopted, but they all sure assume to know how we feel! 🥚

Losing Isaiah relies on a familiar image: the “unfit” Black mother. What gets erased is poverty, lack of support, and a system that separates families first. Most removals are for “neglect,” not abuse. New episode Friday. Episode co-hosted with J (@itsjway.bsky.social).

“would you rather have been aborted/left in a dumpster?” this is an astonishingly cruel thing to say to someone, and the intensity of it arises from the belief that to attack adoption is to conduct a different existential assault: on adoptive parents’ parenthood.

every person who is adopted is a person who has undergone and experienced family separation. the fact that Western culture valorizes #adoption as a system for family creation cannot alter this fact, though it does create a taboo against acknowledging it and against hearing dissenting voices.

Kinship care is where a lot of people assume the story ends. It doesn’t. Let's see what actually happens when families step in — and what support looks like when it’s treated as an afterthought instead of a priority. #adopteesky
Light blue gradient graphic with bold black text reading, “Families step in. The state largely steps aside.” Below, smaller text reads, “In South Carolina, more than 57,000 children are being raised by relatives.” Source text at the bottom cites WCSC News (2026) reporting on an AmeriHealth Caritas Foundation grant supporting HALOS kinship caregivers. The handle @adopteescrossinglines appears at the top.Light blue gradient graphic with bold black text reading, “Most kinship caregivers in the Lowcountry are Black women over 45.” Below, text explains they are often raising children with limited income, chronic health conditions, and housing instability. Additional text states they are expected to absorb this responsibility with little support because kinship care is framed as “family duty” rather than something worthy of public investment. Source text appears at the bottom. The handle @adopteescrossinglines appears at the top.Light blue gradient graphic with bold black text reading, “The family policing system depends on relatives to absorb crisis without power.” Below, text lists that kinship caregivers are often denied legal authority, financial support, access to attorneys, and clear paths to stability. The text concludes that this is not a system failure but a design meant to minimize cost and avoid accountability while maintaining control over families. Source text appears at the bottom. The handle @adopteescrossinglines appears at the top.Light blue gradient graphic with bold black text reading, “A new grant will expand legal and navigation support for kinship caregivers in the Lowcountry.” Below, text explains this matters because legal support reduces system involvement and stability requires resources, not sacrifice. You know, I had one physician in it was a German physician in Spain who told me that he likes to recruit South African donors because South Africans have a pure, you know, racial lines, you know. And I'm like, Well, you know this, these, these fantasies about, you know, what people really are and how, how genes work, even in the medical system, still prevail. And he was saying that his South Africa, his South African donors, were more popular and more affordable than donors in the United States that were white, because the donors in the United States were more more mixed and less racially pure than than the South African White donors, and also more expensive. So, you know, he could pay a South African donor $2,000 whereas a US donor might be 10. So, so these, the way that these dynamics surrounding really is sort of a eugenic mission, in some cases, not across the board, but in some cases, it can be that.

the fact that Rosie O’Donnell taught her adopted kid to refer to his own mother as a “tummy lady” is a perfect illustration of the actual role of #adoption in Western societies, as opposed to the moralized image it projects. It is about socially engineering a perfect substitute for natal parenthood.

I love adoptee spaces, but I’m firm on the belief that adoptee-rights advocacy should be led by Black women. They’ve been doing this work long before it had language or platforms. Black families also remain disproportionately impacted by family separation and legal adoption.

Love the term “adoptaganda.” Hollywood doesn’t ask us to interrogate our feelings; it reframes injustice to uphold systems. it tells us how to feel. Olivia Benson becomes our lens of “law and order,” not our friends and neighbors harmed by these systems… shame for victims, praise for police

Since 2016, Arizona’s Department of Child Safety has paid out $30 million in settlements, most for wrongful child removals. These aren’t isolated incidents. They’re proof that the family policing system causes harm and then makes taxpayers pay for it. #adopteesky
Light blue background with curved white shapes. On the left, black serif text reads:
“Arizona Pays $30 Million to Settle Child Welfare Lawsuits.”
Below the text is an image of floating $100 bills.
On the right, smaller text says:
“Since 2016, Arizona’s Department of Child Safety (DCS) has paid out over $30 million in settlements involving children—most often for wrongful removal cases.”

Below, the text lists settlement data:

$6.8 million in 2021 for permanent injury to a child.

$750,000 in 2024 for wrongful removal and abuse of a child with autism.

$50,000 in 2022 for the family of T’revonsay Sales, killed in a group home.
It notes that it takes an average of 4 years to settle claims, and the most common allegation is wrongful child removal.Light blue background with white rounded rectangle.
Left side reads: “The Agency’s Response.”
Below:
“DCS says lawsuits are ‘common’ across high-risk agencies and that settlements don’t reflect poor quality of care.
Lawmakers and families call the system ‘broken’ after multiple child deaths under DCS supervision.”
On the right, a black and white icon shows a paper and pen with an arrow symbolizing sending or forwarding.

Families deserve transparency, accountability, and real support, not settlements.”
