The most recent album on this list came out when I was in the eighth grade, but I suppose that’s in keeping with the theme of “albums that made me.”
Annie (film soundtrack) | Grease (film soundtrack) | The Rocky Horror Show (cast album of the Los Angeles production at the Roxy) | Red Hot Chili Peppers+ Blue (various artists, tribute album) | R.E.M. – Out of Time | Carole King – Tapestry | Barbra Streisand – Live Concert at the Forum | Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall | Company (original cast album)

Baby, it’s all right to walk out when they want you. But we can’t walk out now when after all these rotten years, we’re still a flop. That’s quitting.

I’m afraid the common theme in this #LastFourWatched is style over substance. (Some of these have substance too, but even then it’s subordinated to style.)

This one album pretty much tells you everything there is to know about my musical tastes.
The cover of "red hot + blue" which features a black and white image of Cole Porter behind a wall of text that says "A tribute to Cole Porter to benefit AIDS research and relief" and then list the names of the artists; superimposed on that is a red heart-shape filled with the image of a rose and the word "red," a blue sun-shape filled with the image of an orange and yellow flame and the word "hot," a green plus sign, and a blue cloud shape filled with the image of crashing waves (I think?) and the word blue. It's sort of a nightmare of graphic design.

I don’t have any broad generalization about these four as a group, except that each is extremely reflective of the time in which it was made. I think Fifth Avenue Girl could do extremely well if remade and updated for our current moment. But who today can do what Ginger Rogers did?

saw a high school production of The Drowsy Chaperone today.
I think it’s only my second time seeing the show (first was Broadway) and this time I was haunted by the realization that there were no cast recordings of the era the show is supposed to be recalling - and certainly not two LP gatefold recordings with dialogue

so the whole thing is built on a lie
