Cheap lunch and wine in this secluded hideaway within the busy railway station complex. Foccaccia with rucola & mozzarella, €4.80, and a glass of Soave, €3.50. Plus greenery and Venetian skyline. Not a bad way to eat lunch & kill time before a timed exhibition entrance #Venice

Jeremy Brett in The Merry Widow as the louche Danilo. A 1968 production & the one of the most 1960s things you could ever see. The rock-star feyness, the hairdos, the costumes, the olive-green velvet ... The whole thing is so much fun youtu.be/MxpoeBBhnIA?...

Venice: a tale of salt. Salt was a major resource for the earliest lagoon settlers & the growth of Venice. This is a wall of Venice's old salt store. But salt is both friend & enemy. Bricks eroded by salt water are crumbling & the dust washes into the waters where it all began

A Roman funerary altar in a wall in Venice. All the city's building materials come from outside this miracle built on mud, and some are much older than Venice itself
