A telling typo in the NYT write up of today’s ICE shooting in Austin. I suspect the writer was going for ‘citizens,’ but given the war-like rhetoric coming from the administration, it makes just as much sense to call Renee Good and Alex Pretti ‘civilians.’

The violence in Austin was the second Texas ICE shooting in recent months. President Trump has intensified his deportation effort with more targeted operations, which attract less attention, since two civilians were shot and killed during a crackdown in Minneapolis in January.

Trump’s claim that he would deport everyone unlawfully in the country always meant that he would go after people who entered legally because that is most of the unauthorized population.

There was never a mandate for this president to turn the barrel of the gun and start going after people who legally entered.

As a 19-year-old, I found freedom by coming to understand that there is nothing inherently radical or subversive about being gay. Watching committed same-sex couples be welcomed into the institution of marriage transformed my sense of self-worth, allowing me to envision for the first time a dignified future as an openly gay person. It showed me that something never before possible for gay people now was for me: I could fall in love and build a life with someone without being confined to the closet or shunted to the margins of society.
