As a writer, I'm partial to the EL Doctorow method: learn enough to make it real, but don't go all Silmarillion. As a sci fi reader, I don't want to know exactly how many steps to get to the ship's head, unless it's important later. I just assume there's a reachable head unless you say otherwise.

In Tiamat’s Wrath (Book 8 of #TheExpanse) Duarte decides to play tit-for-tat with the Ring entities to find out if they’re intelligent or just a deadly phenomenon. But in the previous 2-3 books (and S5-6)it seems obvious they were already playing, and humans just weren’t intelligent enough to learn.
