J. Peterson @isonno.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Late '70s: Anti-aliasing: Trust me, when you've never seen it before, it's mind-blowing. Mid-80s: JPEG/DCT: Wait, you can fit 4MB of image data in a 400K file?? Early 90s: Cheap CMOS cameras. Looks like an LED, takes pictures, costs less than $10! (Video cameras ran $200+ then) 000

J. Peterson @isonno.bsky.social · 25/09/2026No, the best way to read Wired is on a regular web page that works well with a mobile browser! Then, as soon as you close the browser tab, you know no advertisers are tracking you, nothing is lurking in the background draining your phone's batteries. @katie-drummond.bsky.social 000

Making that point, that realization we all get there, I think was a good way to build empathy for the full spectrum of people using our products. 000
J. Peterson @isonno.bsky.social · 22/08/2026I recall a lecture years ago at our software company about designing for people with disabilities. J. Peterson @isonno.bsky.social · 25/07/2026One thing about the old '70s 8-bit micros: Everything about them - registers on the CPU chip, PCB layout, OS implementation, app software, etc. - fits in one human brain. It may take a while, but you can understand the entire system. Generally not the case with larger CPUs. 010
J. Peterson @isonno.bsky.social · 25/07/2026As someone who was around in the '70s: you frequently had to cram your code and data (and often, the OS) into a tiny address space. Like 64K. Not fun. Code overlays crash a lot. I was so happy to get 32 bit pointers in the 80s! 100
