💥 Why does this matter? It suggests online outrage may not reflect what a broad public wants but may be driven by a small, highly engaged minority of users who reproduce this content.

Across 3 pre-registered studies, we consistently found people do NOT prefer moral-emotional content over neutral or plain emotional content & sometimes they even avoid it. Key takeaway: Selection ≠ transmission. What spreads may not be what people want in their feed.

New paper with Yanna Krupnikov out in Political Communication! 🎉 We know moral-emotional content ("moral outrage") spreads fast on social media. But does that mean people actually want to see it? We tested whether people select this content when given the choice - turns out, not really.

💡Main finding: Appraisal-based models work much better for general emotional experiences than for political ones. In politics, negative emotions are hard to distinguish and predict from appraisals alone. So the paper challenges the assumption that emotions work in the same way across domains. 🫀

Political science often builds on psych. theories of emotion, but rarely tests whether their core assumptions travel well to political contexts. Across two surveys, respondents recalled either political or general emotional experiences, labeled the emotion, and rated 18 appraisal of the event.

➡️ Emotional involvement in politics isn’t just a by-product of being informed. It’s about feeling invested and feeling confident. For civic education, this means that building interest & confidence matters, while at the same time confidence without knowledge risks misdirected anger.

Using 3 waves of the ANES + pre-registered experimental studies in 🇳🇱 & 🇺🇸 we show that: ❌ Knowledge is weakly or inconsistently related to emotions ✅ Interest strongly predicts all emotions ✅ Confidence-in-knowledge strongly predicts anger Lowering confidence experimentally reduces anger

Past work suggests that political sophisticates, those who are interested and know more about politics, are more emotionally engaged. But recent work on misinformation and overconfidence raises doubts. 👉 We ask: Which component of “political sophistication” actually drives emotional engagement?
