Direct cell-to-cell transmission of retrotransposons
Retrotransposons can infect neighboring cells using a mechanism that relies on a small fusogen-like protein rather than on the envelope protein that is typically required for infection.

We reengineered the TIR-Learner for 60-100 times faster de novo search of Terminal Inverted Repeat transposons. We completed annotating 579 vertebrate genomes in 4 hours! Kenji Gerhardt did all the heavy lifting for this "side project".

Martinez-Ugalde et al. used comparative transcriptomics to show that argonaute protein exWAGO is part of an evolutionarily conserved pathway for LTR retrotransposon regulation. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evag117 🖌️ Laura Fabiola Espinosa Juárez / Isaac Martinez-Ugalde #genome #evolution #celegans
GBE | Comparative Transcriptomics Reveals an Extracellular Worm Argonaute as an Ancestral Regulator of LTR Retrotransposons

Genomic fossils with modern functions. exWAGO uses soloLTR-derived sRNAs for genomic defence and extracellular RNA-based communication. Illustration by Laura Fabiola Espinosa Juárez / Isaac Martinez-Ugalde.

Pseudouridine selects RNAs for extracellular transport
RNAs move through the extracellular space to transmit information between cells, including mammalian neurons, yet how specific RNAs are channeled into these extracellular routes is unknown. Using geno...

Super excited to see our work shared with the scientific community! We know #Argonaute proteins can be extracellular, but can they be transferred to recipient cells and can they function? Happy reading!
