More like Sterling Hayden. The whole Purity of Essence thing is very Trump 2.0.
Sterling Hayden as General Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove, improbably firing a 30-pound machine gun from the hip through an office window as he chomps on a very Freudian cigar.

A few years ago, within his gubernatorial term, I was working in Utah and someone said all the universities were busy taking references to “Jews and homosexuality” off of their websites because of a new state law. He doesn’t get to tell me not to be mad about that.

i am having trouble articulating this but a system that excuses gang rape as a youthful error on behalf of college men with ~ bright futures ~ does so because it is served by producing older men who are comfortable with, even enthusiastic about, torturing people at the system's behest

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

As long as we're talking about Revolutionary War things that violate hypermasculine warrior mythology, I have to mention the origin of "Yanke Doodle Dandy."

Important question if you're wondering whether AIs have souls.

I'm told this is mostly because of all the investment in AI. Which makes me nervous about what happens when investors discover they're not getting their money back.

Since we're talking a *very* patriarchal culture, I think we can overlook having a non-English mother. Otherwise I think we'd have to go back to Hengist and Hortha! Not that anybody should take this issue seriously!

Delightful also to hear real eagle noises. In movies eagles are always dubbed with hawks, since hawks found fierce and eagles sound like adorable squeakers.

I once read a bio of Richard III, where the author said we should be less mean to him because he was the last English King of England. But now it occurs to me that he doesn't qualify, being Norman. So the last English King of England was Edward the Confessor.

Does Rhea Seahorn count as a character actor?
Final scene from Season 1 of Pluribus. Carol Sturka (Rhea Seahorn), visibly depressed, is walking past the shipping contain that a helicopter has just dropped onto her driveway. Behind her, Manousos Oviedo (Carlos Manuel Vesga) gestures to it and asks "What is this?" She answers, wearily, "Atom bomb."

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

It's a little disturbing to discover that we're all dependent on hand-built transformers manufactured by a process that hasn't changed in 140 years. All the effort we've put into developing new ways to *use* electricity while doing nothing to upgrade the way we distribute it.

That's the central problem with using AI to find things out. It's right often enough so that people trust it mroe than they should.

He talked about obscure legal stuff that he'd found out through AI that he'd found helpful. But he simply didn't want to hear about the risks he was taking. Not even from his AI.

I once encountered a dude on Reddit who swore by using AI to draw up contracts and do legal research. Rather than argue with him, I suggested that he ask his AI what risks he was taking by doing this. He got mad and told me all the reasons he thought doing legal stuff with AI was great.

Reliability isn't "something they need to work on." It's been an issue with Starship from day 1. There have been 14 Starship launches so far, and only 3 of them have happened without an engine failing. Until they prove they can build a reliable engine, the capability of the vehicle is meaningless.
210
Isaac Rabinovitch @isaac32767.picknit.com · 28/09/2026
Because there was enough redundancy for this particular mission. If they want NASA to certify this vehicle for manned flight, *all* the engines have to work, *all* the time. Same goes for starmind. You can't do 3 to 9 launches a day if 1 in 6 engines fail.
