Danish municipalities differ significantly in how much readily available money they hold, according to an analysis by CEPOS, a Danish liberal think tank.
Copenhagen Municipality has the largest liquid holdings per resident, with savings equivalent to 31,685 DKK for each person.
At the other end of the ranking are Hjørring, Sorø, Thisted, Lolland and Aalborg municipalities. Their liquid holdings range from 3,127 DKK to 4,354 DKK per resident.
Liquid holdings can be viewed as municipal savings that have not been allocated to a specific purpose. Municipalities typically use the money to manage ongoing incoming and outgoing payments.
CEPOS said municipalities must always maintain a certain level of liquidity to cover their regular financial obligations.
Local authorities may also build up savings to finance future projects.
