The series is a rare example of a film adaptation being even better than a good book.

Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school. Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon! 🌕 💛

This damn post has absolutely ruined my brain every time I hear someone mention "for the time being." Major kudos to the poster, if I ever meet you in person I will congratulate you and then punch you in the face.

Boss: Let's put this matter aside for the time being

Me: [looking around nervously] Can only you see the time being?

Boss: Huh?

Me: Is it standing near me?

Boss: Who?

It's the last panel of the comic "Judgment Day" (Al Feldstein & Joe Orlando) from EC Comics in 1953. In the comic, an astronaut in a space suit confronts apparent racism & segregation among aliens on an alien planet. In this final panel, our hero is revealed to be a Black man. Controversy ensued.

IDGAF if it "was never real," it crosses THE line. Anyone able but not trying to remove him is complicit in a planetary threat and must themselves be removed. 2/2

A "blowhard" is someone who dominates conversations & takes credit for others' accomplishments. This is someone who puts the entire planet at risk of nuclear Armageddon. 1/2

I ain't complaining. Credibly threatening (probably nuclear) annihilation of a civilization and risking global nuclear armageddon is a whole different beast from his usual loathsome antics.

Sure, yes. Agreed and conceded. But I don't know about you, but I'm eyeballing a particular culture today, and I think every other culture worth its salt is on the same page as me. There are a few issues that just... aren't relative or negotiable. Paradox of tolerance and all that.

the free market can't accurately valuate everything after all: who knew? (besides all the great thinkers who orthodox economists have been ignoring forever)

It does, and that seems like a cultural-values problem. Those are transmitted largely from parent to child. So I can't help but feel like this is related to the devaluation of parenthood and the dismantling of the proverbial village.

Maybe. But, you can believe in the goodness of at least one, and so can I. & then we can believe in each other's. & then one more & one more. Eventually almost all of us'll be linked. If only we could do something about the outliers without compromising our shared basically-good principles though 🥴

At this point it has nothing to do with that old lunatic. Credibly threatening anyone with nuclear annihilation must be THE red line for ALL of us. Anyone with influence who isn't taking drastic action should be considered complicit in potential nuclear war and treated accordingly.
010
Georgina @ironecho.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
For anyone with any degree of influence/power over the situation, a failure to take drastic action is morally equivalent to pressing the big red button yourself. Trump is untouchable by us, but not by some. Nevermind the dementia-riddled, narcissistic old lunatic: time to go after his handlers.
000
Georgina @ironecho.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
Consider the level of the threat. Failing to try to prevent nuclear annihilation of a civilization/world is just as morally unjustifiable as pressing the button yourself. Time to take appropriate action against the people with influence/power who are not taking drastic action to put a stop to this.

Georgina @ironecho.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
People may care or not about Trump's antics. BUT credibly threatening Iran w nuclear annihilation is on a totally different level. I'm not OK. Doubt I'm alone, but we need a WAY more forceful reaction from his handlers & opposition. Lack of action = complicity. Time for action against them too.
000
Georgina @ironecho.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
yeah no I am painfully alarmed, how about the rest of you? I'm totally burned out on caring about Trump's antics, but a credible threat of nuclear annihilation of Iran or anyone else is on a completely different level, and I'm not okay, and I don't think I'm alone in that.

Georgina @ironecho.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
Seems like he wants to. I keep telling myself that TACO but I've still got a terrible pit in my stomach, in utter disbelief it's even a remote possibility. The military leadership wouldn't have let it happen but Hegseth fired a bunch of non-loyalist brass last week.

Easter proper, that is. Eggs and bunnies are about spring fertility and renewal; they have nothing to do with Jesus.

Ope, you missed the subtext. He subtly but distinctly acknowledged that Easter & the Resurrection aren't the same holiday. Often conflated, but Easter is named after the Pagan goddess of fertility, while the Resurrection is Christian. These days Easter is a cultural celebration of spring renewal.

💯 Not saying he's dead, just observing: the spelling, wording, & sentence structure do NOT sound like him. He got "strait" right, but "rain" wrong. Some of his sentences have multiple clauses that fold in unusual ways: I don't think he's capable of that. And he's crass, but he doesn't usually swear.

Ulysses is famously of its own place and time though. It would have been so much easier to read for people who caught all its more local references, no? Needing footnotes really takes away from that kind of experience. I'm sure its original target audience found themselves on a hook throughout.

💯 he was clear. Top effort, top results. It's partly just a muscle issue anyway. I was fluent when I was a kid, but haven't spoken French aloud in decades & sound a little like him now: it feels like muscle atrophy. I have to speak slowly and my mouth and throat struggle to make the right shapes.

We complain so much about our systems' shortcomings & failures, but we don't take it seriously when people propose alternative systems that wouldn't have those kinds of problems. Why are we taking THIS system seriously? It's driving us off a cliff! Stop listening to status quo-ers.

I should add that all those years later, when my dad told me how close he had been to evacuating us during the Three Mile Island meltdown, he still berated himself for not having done it sooner. "Never wait for the update that changes your mind," he said, "because by that time it's too late."
