Its sad, because we've never needed the Greens more. But if the Greens are no longer the most progressive party when it comes to climate action and climate justice, then they must take stock and refocus It is very sad that so many vote to continue injustices

I was in London at the weekend and it was fascinating* how many people want the convenience and proximity of living in a city yet drive a big SUV as though they're out in the countryside. It's amazing* how people don't see the contradictions of trying to live both lifestyles at once *Appalling

EV sales rose above 2023 levels for only the 2nd time this year, according to latest SIMI stats While sales were up 59.3% last month compared to November 2023, EV sales are still 24.2% below last year's results due to Government grant cuts & misinformation www.irishevs.com/new-governme... #GE24
A graph showing electric vehicle sales in Ireland for 2022, 2023 and 2024. Aside from January and November 2024, 2023 was by far the most successful year for EV sales until Government grants were cut in July, causing a significant drop off

It is as much the way they have comported themselves as the key metrics on emissions or the number of bills passed (e.g. their response to class/climate justice, which increasingly waned during their tenure in government)

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
I think we were all realistic about what was possible in the position that they were in (albeit, it was their choice to enter the coalition) But, compared to the Programme for Government and promises prior to the election, they have underwhelmed in our opinion

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Again, the atmosphere doesn't care why we fail to cut GHG emissions - only that we do We're not disagreeing that politics is complex and fraught with change and compromise. Just that the Greens have not delivered on their promises, and that has shown in GE24
010
IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Their manifesto from this election was not science-aligned. Hence why they scored so badly in the Friends of the Earth and Not Here Not Anyway reports The Programme for Government was agreed by all parties as the deliverables for their term. They failed to deliver

Thanks Simon, we're glad you liked it. We hope its nuanced - it could have been many tens of thousands of words long, but we hope its a fair reflection of where the party has drifted from its own values and promises We're fully with you on wolves now! :)

Our hope is, very much, that the Greens will come back stronger from this. We need them! But we also need them to be effective, progressive and science-aligned

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
We hope there is nuance in there and that it also does recognise that the Greens did effect some meaningful changes The question is whether that's enough, and climate science, the Programme for Government and the Climate Act all say its not, sadly

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Yes, a tiny minority is culpable for the vast majority - but we can also see that the majority aren't really digging deep when it comes to actual climate action/just transition None of our climate action is actually in line with IPPC climate science...

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
We'd dispute that. As the article outlines, they were no longer the progressive option on climate action or climate justice Regardless of what the national polls might say (can we ever trust them?!) there are many Green voters who have been disillusioned and voted elsewhere

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Such a disappointment, and yet they should be such an important party at this time in the Climate Emergency

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 01/12/2024
Hmm, we can see the logic, but if anyone thought FF/FG were taking any climate action then they weren't paying attention in the first place But we totally get the sentiment. We hope its a useful, nuanced article

But it also ties in with very neoliberal ideas of elevating the self above society. So many people have bought SUVs thinking they'll product their family - but that couldn't be more ironic, given the threat to occupants, other road users and the climate

IrishEVs @irishevs.bsky.social · 29/11/2024
A lot of it comes down to just how hard manufacturers have marketed SUVs over recent years, while also reducing the number of non-SUV options that are available to customers. This all started in the US with tax breaks for trucks - SUVs being listed as 'trucks'

2 years and 9 months in the making; months longer than planned; but now, Dublin’s first continuous suburbs to city centre cycle route is opened
-- Key section in the route was finished as part of wider €68m Clontarf to City Centre project, which included everything from new water mains to new bus stops.-- It's now possible to cycle 12km from Sutton Cross to the city centre and Docklands on a continuous route. The Taj Mahal was built in 17 years. The Great Wall of China was finished in around 2,000 years.

Here is how Fine Gael did. #ge24 #speirgorm
Fine Gael showed no commitment to banning LNG, no commitment to a data centre moratorium, and no commitment to ending energy poverty. Our assessment on Fine Gael’s manifesto climate commitments on LNG: Fine Gael’s manifesto does not mention LNG, therefore it fails to make a commitment on the crucial climate issue of banning LNG. Disconcertingly, it actually includes language that supports LNG: Fine Gael’s manifesto pledges to "Implement Shannon Estuary Taskforce Recommendations” which states "In the case of natural gas, the Taskforce recognises that this is considered a green transition fuel by the EU since 2021 and its use is encouraged ‘to allow us to accelerate the shift from more polluting activities, such as coal generation, towards a climate neutral future, mostly based on renewable sources’. In addition to providing a new energy supply that is reliable, cost competitive, and incremental for our industries in the region to both decarbonise and grow, the Taskforce remains of the view, expressed in our interim report, that an LNG import/storage facility and electricity generation would be a significant strategic investment in the North Kerry/West Limerick region.”Our assessment on Fine Gael’s manifesto climate commitments on Data Centres: Fine Gael’s manifesto fails to commit to a moratorium on data centres. It explicitly endorses data centres with no commitments to a moratorium or substantial steps to reduce the detrimental climate impacts of data centres. "Support Data Centres as Renewable Catalysts: Allow data centres that contribute to economic growth and efficient grid usage, prioritising waste heat capture for district heating systems." (p. 43)
"Set out an ambitious energy plan for 2030: We will create a comprehensive plan for energy generation, connectivity, and planning processes, emphasising renewable sources to provide certainty for industries making short- and medium term investments. This plan will also guide the development of data centre infrastructure in alignment with our decarbonisation objectives and Ireland’s knowledge-based economy." (p. 105)Our assessment on Fine Gael’s manifesto climate commitments on Energy Poverty: Fine Gael’s manifesto fails to commit to eliminating energy poverty or to commit to specific and comprehensive steps to meaningfully reduce energy poverty.
