Activity ideas for a person with dementia in gardens and using plants and flowers
From the October/November 2015 issue of our magazine, activities involving plants and flowers can be enjoyable and beneficial for a person with dementia, even if they don't have access to a garden.

#AlzChat - I'm including this popular and effective activity in ideas for seasonal activities in dementia care: Paper-leaf-wreath-making! Paint a range of autumnal colours across a piece of thin card and cut out leaf shapes. Then glue these onto a card ring. Add ribbon or string to hang.

#AlzChat Last month we mentioned memory boxes. How about creating an Autumnal box. Fill a box with pine cones, acorns, beechnuts, gourds, cinnamon sticks, orange and gold fabrics etc to create a sensory activity that can stimulate stories or words related to Autumn. (photo C Giles with permission)

#AlzChat - among various creative activities in 'A Creative Toolkit for Communication in Dementia Care' (JKP publishers) is channelling artist Andy Goldsworthy. Use fallen leaves and berries to create transient patterns on tables or walls or benches. Take a photo. The results are often stunning.

#AlzChat This autumn activity is artfully messy but the results are pleasing! People enjoy the painted cones as table displays. You can add eco-friendly glitter for that extra special sparkle!

#AlzChat The opportunity to gather leaves for pressing still creates a buzz of excitement among the families we've worked with who are living with dementia- This is a process of sorting, choosing, deciding, pressing leaves on sheets of paper beneath heavy books (or a press)...then making a collage.

#AlzChat yes photo albums are fabulous for reminiscence - especially if photos are labelled or little stories / narratives are available. We try to avoid asking ‘ who is this?’ Or ‘testing’ persons memory. 🩷

#AlzChat One of my favourite activities with families (particularly in dementia care) is to create a simple grid using pieces of ribbon, and support a person to place an object in each square to talk about. These may be all related- or different themes.
