Creepily, the office calls when the batteries are low and then drop off fresh ones to swap out. Even the bldg door has an electronic entry, the flaw of that exposing itself recently when there was a brief power outage and the battery back-up caused a lock-out for 10 minutes till they reset it.

I won't buy new tech. When I needed a new car this year, I bought an older used one, without automatic GPS. I won't buy a new TV because they're enabled with spyware and always-on microphones. I fear that the connected lock on my apt will be used to lock me out as soon as I'm a day late on rent.
