What can we all do as a community to stop Violence Against Women and Girls before it starts and ensure their ongoing safety?

Each recommendation sets out what participants are calling for, why it matters, the timebound actions needed, who has a role to play, and the difference it would make if it became reality. And every word is theirs.

37 people. 4 groups. 740 collective hours of learning and deliberation & finally, 8 recommendations that @maidstonebc.bsky.social has committed £250,000 to bring to life. That's what it took to build 'Maidstone Together: A Community Discussion', to help address Violence Against Women and Girls.

Stephanine Draper, Director of Innovation and Practice at Involve UK said: "What made this powerful wasn't just that residents were asked their views, it's how they got there. Women, young women, men and young men first spoke honestly within their own groups, before coming together to test ideas and hear each other out. They weighed up real trade-offs, accurate information and meaningful change, not just first reactions. That's what gives their recommendations their weight: they're the considered judgement of the people who will live with the outcome. The process itself has done something important too, it has built trust between communities and shown that when people are given a genuine say, they come up with great solutions that are then acted on."Stephanine Draper, Director of Innovation and Practice at Involve UK said: "What made this powerful wasn't just that residents were asked their views, it's how they got there. Spot on from @involveuk.bsky.social “Bringing all of us into decision-making is absolutely central to how we tackle our biggest problems and seize the opportunities before us.”
There is a positive reason to do this: the problems facing us are too big and too complex; politicians cannot solve them on their own and the idea that the state can and should provide is broken; we need all shoulders to the wheel. There is also a defensive reason to do this: our society is fracturing and community cohesion breaking down. Too many people say politics isn’t working and democracy is not worth saving.

This is not a sideshow. Bringing all of us into decision-making is absolutely central to how we tackle our biggest problems and seize the opportunities before us. Our new PM has form in this agenda. This is a golden moment for him to grasp and lead from the get go.
