I’ve got goals 💪
Screenshot of my grades with star stickers. Text reads: My first semester back at school was a lot of work. But I earned 25 credits and got a 4.0 GPA. For the first time in a long time, I’m feeling proud of myself 🥹

Claiming that audiobooks aren’t reading is ableist.

I was essentially booted from my last book club. I didn’t like Circe and I wasn’t quiet about it 😂
4-panel comic featuring a girl in a blue dress holding a book. Panel 1: she says “Okay, ready for book club!” Panel 2: she says, “Oh wait, I forgot one thing…” Panel 3: she adds a button pin to her dress and says, “There!” Panel 4: close-up of button pin that reads, “WARNING strong & unpopular opinions” (Artist signature says “introvert doodles”)

Mid-December and still no snow! Luckily, I have my own snowball ❄️

Curious whether anyone else cried during their neuropsych assessment? It was much more frustrating and overwhelming than I expected 😕

Dial-A-Story, by its very name, hearkens back to a different era when you could manually “dial” a phone number and listen to a story. After more than three decades, the Library service continues to receive at least 2,000 calls a month at 816.701.3456.

The Dial-A-Story service is simple but enduring: listen to a story when you call 816.701.3456.

Today I saw an Idaho Commission for Libraries training video (2021). It advocated for intellectual freedom & the fight against censorship. Thanks to Idaho law, now minors can’t even browse any books except in the children’s section (unless a parent signs an affidavit). Time to update that video :/
Image has 2 screenshots and a photo. First screenshot is from LiLI.org and states, “Libraries should not restrict access to collections and services for children in order to avoid controversy or objection from parents.” Screenshot 2 is from ALA.org and states, “The American Library Association supports equal and equitable access to all library resources and services by users of all ages. Library policies and procedures that effectively deny minors equal and equitable access to all library resources and services available to other users is in violation of the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights. The American Library Association opposes all attempts to restrict access to library services, materials, and facilities based on the age of library users.” Photo is of a sign in a public library. Sign has a red stop sign and states, “Pursuant to Idaho code 18-1517B Effective July 1, 2024 To proceed beyond this point you must: Be 18 years of age or older. (If you are under 30 be prepared to show Photo ID.) Or Have an unrestricted library card. (Please have your card ready to be scanned.) Or Be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian who must sign an affidavit every time you come to the library.” Caption I added to photo says “PS the YA section is behind this sign.”

Wondering if my habit of getting dates/times mixed up is an ADHD thing or a dyscalculia thing. Maybe it’s both 😂 In other news, I didn’t actually have a 7:30 am class today.

I was diagnosed with HIV in 1998, when I was 30. Many of my friends had died but I was told, with the new drugs available, I could expect to live another 20 years. That was 27 years ago. Honour those we lost. Celebrate that we can now treat and prevent HIV. Make HIV stigma history. #WorldAIDSDay
Me aged 30. I was in LA and dressed up to go to a posh do (hired tux). My hair is slicked back and, in black and white under bright Californian sun, my skin looks impeccable. I’m looking directly into the camera with a closed mouth smile. I look like a movie star. Selfie. I’ve got very freshly cut hair and I’m looking directly at the camera with a similar smile. I’m wearing a vest. My lines are deeper, my eyes heavier, but I’m still in pretty good shape for a 57 year old.

Gentle reminder that it’s acceptable to say no this holiday season. It’s all right to say no to any traditions you don’t have the physical or emotional energy for. It’s okay if your need to rest outweighs your desire to celebrate. Rest.

Received my lovely copy of issue no. 9 of Pile Press’ literary arts magazine with my poem “The Peach.” 🍑🍑🍑
Front cover of Pile Press Literary Arts Magazine issue no. 9My poem in Pile Press Literary Arts Magazine no. 9

The Peach

You buy a peach today.
The greengrocer could not know the heated thoughts it brings to my mind I hope he cannot read the blush on my cheeks a reflection of the pink dawn across the taut skin of the fruit
But you read it in my downturned eyes, and the pulse in my neck
We walk home slowly, my hand in yours
My skin tight as the flesh of the peach.
In our room
the sun wraps us in its glow as we lay on the bed
and you measure the weight of the fruits in your hands
Seductive soft, the velveteen skin
invites you to rub it tenderly with your thumb, then more forcefully the skin parts, peels open reveals the warmed flesh seeping with sweet juice syrup springs to your touch drips down your fingers and you put your mouth to the peach.

When was the last time someone made you laugh so hard you couldn’t breathe? (PS we should do that more often, don’t you think?)

“Let’s not talk politics, let’s set that aside and come together as a family.” No. You don’t get to elect someone who hurts the people I love and still eat my pecan pie. May you have the Thanksgiving day you deserve. 👋

Not a big fan of most holidays, tbh. There’s a performative aspect that’s never really made sense or appealed to me. I also just think we should eat pie when we want pie and give gifts year round, whenever we see something that would make someone we love happy. (Probably the autism though, lol.)

“Positively Introverted” is now out in Thai. It’s a strange feeling whenever I can’t read a book I wrote.
Photo of the book “Positively Introverted” published in Thai. The book is open to a page with a cartoon illustration of a girl in a blue dress trying to take a stick away from a reindeer. In the background of the photo, there is a bookshelf and fireplace.

I work at a library, and we offer so much more than books. Patrons have access to: 3D printers, a soundproof recording studio, Cricut machines, thousands of DVDs, board games, Legos, and free classes on writing, finances, ESL, book making, etc. Check out your public library, you might be surprised!
