In a small town, everybody knows your business, and keeping secrets is a nigh-insurmountable task. For Steve Harrington, it's just another Tuesday, because the alternative is a fate worse than death.

His parents already see him as the ultimate disappointment. His girlfriend? Well, the timer on her wrist is ticking down to the end of their relationship, and they both know it.

But Steve's hasn't moved since he was born, perpetually stuck at 224 days. A greyed-out mockery of what could have been. For whatever reason, true love isn't in the cards for him, his soulmate lost to some unknown fate.

The unmoving number on his wrist makes him a freak—a word Steve hurls at others without much thought, if only as a shield to keep it from being thrown back at him.

All he wants is to be normal. To be loved.

Eddie Munson wants none of it. His timer ticks down like a death sentence, spelling the end of his life as he knows it. Especially when he becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders across Hawkins.

As his friends fight to clear his name, he feels like he's fighting against fate itself. Fighting for a future he can write for himself, rather than some predetermined path dictated by a tattoo he never asked for.

He regrets it as soon as the words are out of his mouth. Billy grabs him by the shirt, shoving him against the wall.

"Or what? You gonna beat my ass? I heard you couldn't even beat Jonathan Byers."

"I don't want any trouble," Steve tells him, holding up his hands in surrender. "I don't even want the title anymore, okay? You can have it, man. You can have it."

Seeing that he isn't fighting back, Billy gives up. He gives Steve one final shove, then stalks off to class—if he even goes to class. Steve is pretty sure he's never seen him outside of PE.

Which is probably where they'll run into each other again.

Steve has time to wonder if this is what it feels like to get bullied before the bell rings, and he has to practically run to avoid being late to class.
