Title: From Trojan horses to AI-proof exams: how professors are tackling students' Al use
Intro: Academics worldwide are rethinking their assessment approaches - from developing exams that artificial-intelligence tools can't pass to sneaking hidden AI prompts into tasks to catch cheating students.

maybe they are less insidious when they are isolated cases but I don’t think they are when those verbs are marshalled systematically and structurally embedded in the interaction style zenodo.org/records/1934...
Text: Who hasn't tried to verbally cajole a stalled car into starting or said that their laptop "decided" to update at the worst moment? These, however, are weak versions of anthropomorphism in the form of "as if" metaphorical reasoning used as a pragmatic predictive strategy. Most of us don't really believe that talking to our car will help start it.
However, Epley, Waytz, and Cacioppo (2007: 867) posit that even very weak versions of anthropomorphism
"can still have a powerful impact on behavior, with people behaving toward agents in ways that are consistent with these metaphors." What is more, even a small sensory cue can trigger anthropomorphism, "Adding a humanlike voice to a machine might make it seem more like a person" (Schroeder and Epley 2016: 1428). If even minimal cues trigger social responses, what can we expect from systems that simulate fluid, seemingly coherent, conversational exchanges with humans on purpose and in real time?
We believe anthropomorphism in genAl is more ethically problematic than when we say, for instance, that our printer is being "stubborn," because the contextual conditions to foster this tendency when using chatbots have become engineered, i.e. hardcoded, into the interactional style these systems are designed to follow.
Attributing human capacities to a machine is the result of a structural feature of generative Al systems,

Prompt: how many days of the week have a football penalty in them?
Answer: Three days of the week contain the letters for "penalty" (p-e-n-a-l-t-y):
• Tusesday
• Wednesday
• Saturday
None of the names of the days of the week contain the exact sequence of letters to spell "penalty" as a standalone word. However, if you are looking for which days contain the individual letters p, e, n, a, I, t, and y within their names, the breakdown is as follows:
• Thursday, Tuesday, and Saturday contain the letter
• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday
contain the letter a.
• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday contain the letter d.

ICYI "When Responsibility Enables Ethics Washing: Responsible Realism as a Critical Lens for Probing Institutional Recommendations for the Use of AI in Higher Education" zenodo.org/records/1934...
We reject the idea of technological determinism, but we are wary of corporate strategies promoting early lock-in because, as technologies become widespread, they gain momentum (Hughes 1994), and when this happens, technology reversal becomes more difficult, not because it is an autonomous force, but because infrastructure, companies and institutions, regulations, the media, professions, markets, and our very own social and individual habits have coalesced around it. Think of cars.
Institutionally endorsed adoption can build a momentum that later makes technologies hard to undo. This is not to say that reversals are impossible; they aren't, as shown, among other cases, by the phasing out of asbestos as insulation material in construction and ship building (see e.g., Council EU 2023; USEPA 2024).
Reversals can and do happen, but it is indisputable that it would have been easier and far less tragic if the warnings about the extremely harmful effects associated with asbestos, known since the end of the 19th century (Frank and Van Zandwijk 2023), had been taken into account and incorporated in regulation and professional best practices before its use and irreversible harms started to grow exponentially in the 1950s. We believe we find ourselves at a similar juncture now with Al in higher education.

Melinda Cooper’s essay on the Epstein household and its political economy contains this on Marx and Varoufakis 🎯 www.equator.org/articles/eps...
This form of domestic service is tacitly ruled over by something akin to 'master and servant' laws - a form of employment that once granted masters virtual dominion over their private sphere of government and punished workers with criminal sanctions such as in-house arrest, imprisonment, or even corporal punishment. Given the origins of 'master and servant' laws in medieval England, it would be easy to identify this development as a return to feudalism - an increasingly popular reading of the present conjuncture, as exemplified by the recent work of Yanis Varoufakis.
The argument owes much to Marx, who implied that personal domestic service would become obsolete as feudal relations gave way to the free labour contract. But recall that, contrary to Marx's predictions, domestic service expanded in the late-nineteenth century, not in spite of but because of the growing concentration of industrial and financial wealth. Moreover,
'master and servant' relations endured well into the 20th century and have made a comeback in recent decades, if not in formal legal arrangements then at least de facto.

We wrote something along these lines with @javisamo.bsky.social in our AI&Society paper about “AI assistants” link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Conducting bibliographical research exceeds instrumental as it enables us to develop our own research ideas, thus increasing our capacity for critical thinking and creativity, which have intrinsic value. Good bibliographical research situates our work and positions us within an academic tradition, which can and does affect our identity and the values and beliefs we adopt as researchers and as individuals. Doing bibliographical research is part of the process of constructing a conceptual and theoretical scaffold for our own thinking about the topics we are researching. These scaffolds, in turn, are part of dialogical agreements and disputes over vocabularies, traditions, and methods with those that preceded us. A literature review is a very sophisticated way of deliberation.

Headline: Why Gen AI Feels So Threatening to Workers by Erik Hermann, Stefano Puntoni and Carey K. Morewedge
From the Magazine (March-April 2026)
Picture of a person holding a smartphone. Screenshot of the Summary. As generative Al begins to handle more cognitive, creative, and interpersonal tasks, many employees perceive it to be a threat to their competence, autonomy, and sense of belonging at work. These psychological disruptions are producing widespread resistance, disengagement, and even covert opposition to Al initiatives. The challenge for leaders is not just technical integration but emotional and social adaptation. To meet that challenge, the authors propose the AWARE framework, which helps leaders address the psychological needs of employees: acknowledge employee concerns, watch for adaptive and maladaptive coping behaviors, align support systems with psychological needs, redesign workflows around human-Al synergies, and empower workers through transparency and inclusion. Leaders that apply this framework can ensure that gen Al tools enhance-rather than erode-workers' motivation and
commitment.

This one is a new flavour: warning OTHERS to be careful about believing that machines are conscious while YOU YOURSELF fall for a very similar trap.
Yuval Noah Harari Historian;
A.I. isn't a tool entirely under human control — it is an agent that can make decisions and invent ideas by itself. While I don't think A.I. Will become conscious in the near future, it is highly likely these models will be able to simulate consciousness very effectively, causing a significant percentage of humanity to believe they are conscious.

There are deeper questions about the use of technology that are raised less frequently than “Does it work?” We mean questions such as “What is it for?” and “Is it good?” We claim no originality in this respect; we reintroduce the questions that Joseph Weizenbaum (1972, 611) posed to fellow computer scientists more than 50 years ago in his essay on the side effects of computers.

The latter questions are not only less frequent but have primacy over those about effectiveness. It is our contention that we cannot meaningfully answer the question of whether something works without also addressing the latter questions about ends and moral goodness.

A simultaneous generalization of well-known arithmetical criteria for irreducibility in Q [X] of polynomials in Z [X], including a classical result of G. Pólya and G. Szegö, will be achieved via a general framework for that family of irreducibility criteria. A further generalization, which for any f (X)∈ Z [X] provides an arithmetical function whose values are upper bounds for the number of irreducible factors of f (X) in Q [X], will also be established.

Same as it ever was. Arendt, Crises of the Republic, p.8
The only limitation to what the public-relations man does comes when he discovers that the same people who perhaps can be "manipulated" to buy a certain kind of soap cannot be manipulated-though, of course, they can be forced by terror-to "buy" opinions and political views.
Therefore the psychological premise of human manipu-lability has become one of the chief wares that are sold on the market of common and learned opinion. But such doctrines do not change the way people form opinions or prevent them from acting according to their own lights.
The only method short of terror to have real influence on their conduct is still the old carrot-and-stick approach. It is not surprising that the recent generation of intellectuals, who grew up in the insane atmosphere of rampant advertising and were taught that half of politics is image-making" and the other half the art of making people believe in the imagery, should almost automatically fall back on the older adages of carrot and stick whenever the situation becomes too serious for "theory." To them, the greatest disappointment in the Vietnam adventure should have been the discovery that there are people with whom carrot-and-stick methods do not work either.
