The gap is largest among the most politically interested. When girls are politically engaged, they take up climate as their issue, while engaged boys focus elsewhere. The Greta Thunberg effect is invoked to explain why the cause attracts young girls. Is it also pushing young men away?

The pattern is also remarkably persistent. The gender gap in environmentalism among adolescents has been stable since the 1990s, when the data series starts. This mirrors my findings from the first paper. The Green Gender Gap is not a new phenomenon.

Existing work shows that political socialisation is gendered. As they grow up, girls increasingly see political leadership as incompatible with their own gender identity. I extend this logic to attitudes. Children filter political cues through gendered expectations about what suits women and men.

But why does it matter? Because the Green Gender Gap appears before later-life structural sorting through education and occupation. Part of its source has to lie in how children and young adolescents are politically socialised, and in how that socialisation is gender specific.

Super excited to see the second article from my dissertation published in @politicsgenderj.bsky.social Drawing on unique Norwegian data, I find the green gender gap already exists in early adolescence. Boys are less climate-concerned, less supportive of green policies and less likely to vote green.

Why are women greener than men and why doesn't it always show at the ballot box? I enjoyed discussing this with the talented Beatriz Carvalho, who interviewed me about my PhD research. Curious to read more? See my article in Electoral Studies and my forthcoming article in Politics and Gender.

V-Dem v.16 is now released, w. updated scores for 2025. Most countries remain stable from 2024, but some clear improvements (on diff’t democracy indices), incl. S. Korea, Sri Lanka & Mauritius. Largest declines came, by far, in the US. This figure shows 10-yr changes on the Liberal Dem. index.

🚨 New study by @ingvildzinober.bsky.social on the “green gender gap” in Europe finds women are more supportive of green policies and parties than men. This gap persists even after controlling for education, occupation, and location – pointing to deeper gendered value differences.

Cool, cool, this I can investigate. For example, there are country differences in the average scores on the femininity and masculinity measures in ESS Round 11. That could potentially be used to infer how gender-traditional a country is.

BTW! Gender Threat, what a very important inspiration for my dissertation 💞

Ingvild Zinober @ingvildzinober.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
Agree! I could go a little deeper into the ESS data round 11 to examine country-specific patterns before submitting Chapter 3 (Paper 3) of the dissertation for publication. Do you have any hypotheses about what I might find?

Ingvild Zinober @ingvildzinober.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
To argue that environmentalism is implicitly associated with femininity, I draw on theoretical insights from disciplines outside political science. However, I also find some empirical support for my claim. Norwegian students consistently rank the Norwegian Green Party as the most feminine party.

Ingvild Zinober @ingvildzinober.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
This is exactly what I find in my dissertation! Looking at data from Norway and ESS 11. I find that men who self-identify with a traditional gender role identity are less green compared to non-traditional men. I argue that this is because green politics issues are implicitly linked to femininity.

Exactly. Too often gender is treated as noise rather than something to explain. In my work, I argue that it is not something to control away but a political phenomenon that needs theorising. That said, when we include gender as a covariate in an OLS model, what would be correct terminology?

Exactly! And this is what I look at in my dissertation. I find that men who self-identify with a traditional gender role identity are less green compared to non-traditional men. I argue that this is because green politics issues are implicitly linked to femininity.

This suggests that the political outcomes of the Green Gender Gap are shaped by country-specific contexts, such as party-system characteristics, issue salience, and the availability of credible green political alternatives.
110
Ingvild Zinober @ingvildzinober.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
But when looking at support for green parties, a clear regional divide emerges. In Northern and Western Europe, men are less likely to support green parties. In Southern and Central/Eastern Europe, there is no clear voting gap, despite women holding greener views than men.
110
Ingvild Zinober @ingvildzinober.bsky.social · 03/03/2026
Next, I find the Green Gender Gap is not a Western European phenomenon. Across Southern and Central/Eastern Europe, men consistently express less concern about climate and environmental issues than women.

Still controlling for gender without thinking about why? You can cite me💚👩‍🔬💚 I show that the gender gap in progressive climate and environmental views is a persistent empirical regularity that cannot be explained by differences in socioeconomic background, political ideology, or risk aversion.

I believe that the full explanation is not only that men experience more downward social mobility. Men's political response to lost social status is different from that of women.

Want to see something cool? We live in a gendered world where certain things and activities are seen as more feminine or masculine. But we don’t often consider that political parties can also be gender-coded. I asked ~1,300 students to rank the Norwegian parties from most masculine to most feminine.
