And with this corrupting influence, no wonder my students think a 20-page article is too long. Demon software, be gone 👿

The AI app, which MS has forced upon me, has “suggested” that a 17 page chapter “appears to be a long document” and that I should “save time by reading a summary.” Does this feeble instrument know they are talking to an academic trained to read 100+ pages/day?

We can’t build a country without knowledgable, skilled & smart people who understand history, politics, ethics & policy and have a commitment to democracy. We need more Canada research chairs and a reversal on limiting international students. Now is the time for Canadian universities to lead.

Yes, and a knowledge and educational infrastructure Canadians can afford. Please work with the provinces to boost funding for colleges & universities. They are failing because we have not cared enough about Canadian students to make it work. We need Canadian economists, historians, policy experts..

Canada is not worth defending as an independent nation because there is something sacred in our borders. The ‘existential crisis’ is not primarily our economic viability, as important as that is. It our ethical commitments and what we will do to uphold them.

Never mind the Geneva Convention. Executing paramedics in a war zone breaches an international agreement that has been in place since the 1800s. Every nation silent in the face of Israel’s war crimes are complicit in them.

Once the houses are built, what will you do to keep investment firms from outbidding ordinary people on them, then renting them for high prices? Don’t there need to be restrictions on who can buy these houses first time and upon reselling?

Yes and we already have many ‘world class’ scholars and brilliant students in Canada but both federal and provincial governments have underfunded our universities for years. We wouldn’t ‘need’ to import Americans if we funded Canadian students and scholars. How about some ‘fund Canadian’ patriotism?

Keep planting. Plant seeds. Plant ideas. Plant initiatives. That is all we can do. Many people before us have believed that the end was imminent. They were wrong. Keep going. No matter what, our job here on this earth is to keep planting and tending.

Will your government take measures to reinforce our public universities which have been defunded over two decades, leading many to be critically weakened? They need to be strong & affordable so young Canadians know our history and develop their intellectual, critical & creative capacities.

At a time when universities and orgs are eliminating Gender Studies and DEI programs, note that this appeasement accomplishes what some attempted through violence: to eliminate space for historically and systemically oppressed groups speak for themselves. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Choices were made to get us here; we can make other choices to get us out. Cory Doctorow energizes and gives hope not through emotional manipulation but through sharp ‘forensic accounting’ of our current state, leading to practical suggestions to unwind bad policies. Listen to this interview.

Ramadan can help us realize that we gain focus, perspective and a measure of peace when we moderate consumption. Is there a lesson in this for the way we structure our economies and collective lives? Perhaps it is time for deeper reflection, not just panic-induced nationalistic consumption.
