Director: Yannick Barbara Writer: Yannick Barbara Cast: Yannick Barbara, Olivia Tello, Frankie Toms, Onisha Wilsi Running time: 20mins Short films are so much more than just ‘first taste of film work’ or indications of budget limitations for directors. They can be a full story, a beautiful moment, the sneak peak in human experience, and so much more. A short film can (and should) stand on its own as a unique and complete piece of work.

Director: Florian Salk Writers: Florian Salk, Julieta de Icaza, Mariam Volobueva Cast: Manana Samkharadze Running time: 43mins On occasion, the threads that make up the universe knit together. Sometimes we process the event as coincidence, at other times, we get the feeling that the event has a significance for our psyche. The renowned 20th century Swiss psycho-analyst Carl Jung termed the latter…

Director: Darren K Hawkins Writer: Stephen Knight Cast: Samm Louise Cluff, Lauren Hamilton Neill, Kaeng Chan Running time: 1hr 43mins The police procedural genre is as tempting as it is dangerous for any low-budget filmmaker. Its thrills and dramas are innate, its mysteries, and reveals are baked in. But when budgets are low and access to real crime procedure is limited, how does one capture its latent cinematic potential without sacrificing the verisimilitude it demands?

Ahead of Indy Film Library's Halloween Horror Showcase, The Red Lights of Town director Dia Taylor discusses her deeply personal ghost story, and the dark art of film distribution.

Director: Juan Pablo Montagut Writer: Juan Pablo Montagut Cast: Hazel Ameli & Dani de Groot Running time: 6mins Why does everyone speak in the same way during a perfume commercial? Even when a company springs for a name actor, known for their power to emote through their voice, everything ultimately boils down to the same, cold, lifeless monotony. In many cases, it boils down to what an advert is actually for: selling you the product, by suggesting its presence in your life will in some way connect you to the ineffable coolness of the people you see in the ad.

On September 27th 2026, less than a day after his latest hard-hitting, high-flying match with All Elite Wrestling, Benjamin Satterley – also known as Pac, or earlier in his career Adrian Neville – passed away, aged 40. His sudden loss has been keenly felt across the profession, with fellow pros and fans lining up to pay tribute to someone who couldn’t have been further removed from his in-ring persona.

Short horror movies by six talented directors to be screened at Amsterdam’s Supermercator (Mercatorplein 3H, 1057 BX) from 17:00 on October 24th 2026 The selection will include Isis Calje’s psychological ghost-story ‘Zij’; Ruwan Heggelman’s gore-soaked examination of folklore ‘Gnomes’; and  Junaid Chundrigar and Paco Vink’s animated zombie satire ‘Dooie Boel’

Director: Nelson van Herzele Writer: Ivo Paermentier Cast: Lars Van Der Wolf & Jan Leppens Running time: 8mins A year ago, Nelson van Herzele pre-empted the next big Hollywood trend, when he adapted an internet copypasta into a dark, theatrical parable. But while the cinematic mainstream is currently scrambling to mine memes for their latest IP, Van Herzele has followed up…

While the rest of the media – even the very worst parts – report on Daniel Thomas’ actions, BBC News fails to give its audience the facts.

Director: Ruwan Heggelman Writer: Jasper ten Hoor, Richard Raaphorst & Ruwan Heggelman Cast: Moïse Trustfull, Duncan Meijering Running time: 6mins The myths and legends of a place can provide a great insight into its people – what makes them tick, and where friction may arise. Since moving to the Netherlands, a long-term ambition of mine has therefore become writing a compendium of Dutch ghosts and ghouls.

Director: Junaid Chundrigar & Paco Vink Writer: Junaid Chundrigar & Paco Vink Running time: 14mins Amid the prevalence of Frederic Jameson’s idiom, “someone once said it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”, the foot soldiers of the end times are often portrayed as something other. An external force ushers in Armageddon, overrunning the best made plans of mice and men with irrepressible ease – at best, waving a hand at the decades of ruling-class malaise and social apathy which have weakened the essential services that…

Resident Evil is being heralded as the best video-game adaptation to ever hit screens – but a large part of that is Zach Cregger’s willingness to throw out much of the source material, and immerse what’s left in bits and pieces of a whole history of horror. In the end, however, that strength also becomes one of the film’s biggest weaknesses – as it struggles to make itself feel like more than the sum of its writhing, upsettingly squishy parts.

Director: Kaat Rybak Writer: Kaat Rybak Cast: Esther Noyon, Snorre Petlund Running time: 11mins Kaat Rybak writes in her director’s statement: “I don’t make films for everyone.” It’s a reasonable enough disclaimer. Art is subjective, nobody is denying that, and even in the case where I absolutely hate a movie on IFL, it is fair for a director to issue the rebuttal that “

Director: Quinten Benjamin Meijer Writer: Quinten Benjamin Meijer Cast: Frieda Bossina, Dawit de Koning, Kainé Willie-Harry Running time: 7mins When stories that speak on issues so many of us experience directly, however nightmarish those issues are, there is a danger that the tales told can begin to feel formulaic, resulting in a truly disastrous apathy from the audience. Following in the footsteps of…

During our first in-person Experimental Showcase at Supermercator, we celebrated a cohort of exciting new artists, and also took the opportunity to honour our hall-of-famers, who won previous digital editions. The event ended with audiences getting the chance to know some of our fabulous filmmakers better. After the screenings, a Q&A panel let our attendees put questions to some of the stars and directors behind the movies.

Director: Kaya Melüh Writer: Kaya Melüh Cast: Kaya Melüh, Oskar Tiago, Hanna Lim Running time: 18mins I want to be clear before we get into today’s review, When we fall is many things that I want to see from independent cinema. It has visual flair, it touches on hard-hitting social themes, and it finds the time and space to let its central performers inhabit their characters through some impeccably measured dialogue.

Director: Augusto De Girolamo Del Mauro Writer: Augusto De Girolamo Del Mauro Cast (includes): Francesco Mauriello, Alessio D’Ambrosi Running time: 50mins Of all the great monotheistic religions, only Christianity has a woman as an integral part of their original revelation of the divine. It was the genius of the Papacy to later, in the early middle ages, elevate the Virgin Mary, …

I literally think about this vid every time she talks about acting. 😭

The oppressive heat of summer is fading, and suddenly we feel the space around us. Suddenly we have the time and energy to think again - free to enter into the swirling oranges and browns of autumn in search of fresh perspective. As nature cycles into a new era of transition, and it's a good time to sit with ourselves, to meditate on what we've learned about ourselves this year, and what we might still change before we head into the cold winter months.

Movies by talented UK-based directors screened in Indy Film Library’s return to London Tickets sell out at London’s The Garden Cinema for August 29th showcase Selection spanned life, death, and the hereafter, with films including bittersweet comedy Hi from a mayfly, heartfelt drama The Last Rehearsal, and family horror Dial Having stockpiled another selection of phenomenal short films by UK-based filmmakers, Indy Film Library (IFL) has returned to London’s Garden Cinema, two years after its first…

Director: Emily Carter Writer: Emily Carter & Lucy De Silva Cast: Lizzie Meech Running time: 8mins A 2022 study conducted at King’s College London collected data from more than 1,200 people through an application that collected their experiences in urban or rural life, and found that seeing or hearing the birds was linked to more positive feelings and a greater sense of mental well-being.

Director: Nick Vorsselman Writer: Nick Vorsselman Cast: Albert van Benthem, Kyra Antoni Running time: 15mins In many ways, Contac T will prove a divisive watch. Not so much due to its content – although, it does need to come with a warning that it depicts self-harm – but perhaps more about its intentionality. The film works on many levels, most notably its intriguing aesthetic.

Directors: Lars Hogendoorn & Yannick van den Ende Writer: Lars Hogendoorn Running time: 4mins It is safe to say that Indy Film Library has never received a film like Rubik’s Cube before. In some ways, I hope it stays that way. This may be the most harrowing four-minute watch I have encountered in my time as a critic. But given the subject matter, that is entirely appropriate.

WELCOME BACK TO THE TUBE RATS SUMMER WRASSLIN' SPECIAL HULKAMANIACS. STAY TUNED FOR ANOTHER STUPENDOUS 90+ MINUTES OF SHOW-STOPPING PULSE-POUNDING FOUR-WAY ACTION AS HULK HOGAN TRIES TO SHOW OFF HIS ACTING CHOPS BY TAKING SOME DOWNERS AND SHRINKING BY AT LEAST THREE DRESS SIZES. PLUS - WHO WILL BE YOUR NEW TUBE RATS CHAMPION BROTHER? AND DOES ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER ROBOT WARS?

Niu Lai is a truly horrendous animated tale following a cow and her calf through a half-rendered CGI sandbox – high on drawn-out dramatic pauses, low on consequence. But while it reviews have inevitably evoked discussion around being one of the best ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ watches ever, it also offers nothing that veterans of that medium won’t have laughed harder at elsewhere. So, what is its grand appeal?

Ahead of screening his film 'Framing New Brighton' at Indy Film Library's 2026 UK Short Film Showcase in London, Dylan Cubbin spoke to us about the memories, places, and communities which drive his distinctive brand of documentary storytelling. How long have you been making films for now? Just under two years, really. I’d messed around with making things before that, but I’d say I’ve only been taking it seriously for the last couple of years.

Project Hail Mary is another of those films I’ve ignored countless recommendations for. Ahead of this evening’s solar eclipse, however, I finally caved in – and found swept up in a surprisingly moving sci-fi that takes as much wonder from its humanity, as it does from the endless majesty of space. Just because you find a void, doesn’t mean you have to scream into it.

Directors: Matties Dielemans & Guus Engelbregt Running time: 30mins Every film faces its own unique set of problems, when it comes to getting the project off the ground, seeing it through production, and finding a way to distribute it. But beyond that minefield, all documentaries face the same key question: how much of myself should I put in this movie?

In the two years I have been running the Who Critiques the Critics? segment of Indy Film Library, I have perhaps been guilty of a little snobbishly overlooking micro-video. But while I stumble over three-thousand-word essays about Christopher Nolan's conservatism, ReelTakesReviews’ Dan Monaghan is taking politics and pop-culture in his stride, to show that the future may well be short.

Director: Andrew Nolan Writer: Mark Hennigan Cast: Stevie Martin, Simon Ashe-Browne Running time: 7mins This Conversation Has Been Deleted will undoubtedly play well in film festivals across Europe – and perhaps in the US. Director Andrew Nolan marshals his team well, ensuring the piece is well-paced and professionally edited, with an inoffensive (slightly bland) jazz score, improvised by James Tebbitt, David Anthony Curley, and Dylan Lynch to complement visual gags.

The Odyssey is inescapably a dissection of both the shoot and cry genre, and the crumbling … A siren callRead more

Director: AJ Moss Writer: AJ Moss Cast: Corina Carrillo, Jyllian Petrie, Matt Mattson, Natalie Paige Willison Running time: 15mins Morbid Sight is honest about what it is. This is a proof of concept – with a note in the end credits informing us it was “based on the feature length screenplay by AJ Moss”. The writer-director behind this production clearly envisions a world with more time and space to tell a wider story set in this universe, then, and that’s fair enough.

The small, proud Madrid club are back in Europe this season but playing against a backdrop of a civil war

La Liga side Rayo Vallecano are barred from playing at their home stadium just weeks before the new season over the risk of supporters contracting Legionnaires' disease.

Director: L.Z. Matthias Writer: L.Z. Matthias Cast: Owen Correll, Leah Wilczewski, Veronika Vozniak, Coretta Jewell, Charlotte Frances Akong Running time: 14mins The Legend of the Neverending Oak on the Corner of Sixth & Ave B isn’t exactly a pithy title. It would take up half the elevator pitch, just telling the weary producer what the project was called. Usually I’d let that slide – I don’t think it really impacts how effective a film is if its title doesn’t roll off the tongue.

Director: Caroline Aydee Bergmann Running time: 20mins Critically evaluating any film is a subjective process, guaranteed to hinge at some point on an individual’s preferences, or application of key definitions. Speaking about experimental films is even harder – because you are faced with the extremely personal call of whether something was or wasn’t intended experimentally. After all, some filmmakers absolutely…

Folklore and mythology don’t need to be real to matter. Every story tells us something about the society it was produced in, even if the story itself isn’t literal. But what does the bizarre case of Wisconsin’s infamous cryptid – which nobody but simultaneously everybody believes in – say about life, and culture, in America? In the story of Oedipus, the sphinx is described as mythical creature with the head of a human, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle.

Director: Daniel Hillel-Tuch Writer: Daniel Hillel-Tuch Cast: Daniel Hillel-Tuch Running time: 6mins Ahead of anything else in Peephole, Daniel Hillel-Tuch deserves credit for his work as an editor. Not because there are any particularly ground-breaking tricks here, but that the writer-director-actor was so willing to piece together footage which made him come across as such a thoroughly dislikable individual.

“I like a lot of them artists, but I thought it was crap.” Finally, Wayne Rooney found a way to stick the boot in at a World Cup, in a way that didn’t result in national outrage. And while his clattering challenge on Fifa’s Super Bowl half-time show would later be eclipsed by the brutality of Enzo Fernandez’s needless assault on Pau Cubarsi – which sent the latter into a frightening cartwheel, and the former for an early bath – Rooney’s takedown was a much more welcome among football fans.
