I am sorely tempted by the Japan one, and I don't even own a tape deck. How's the sound? I assume the source is vinyl, so does the French tape sound OK?

At long last, the Fragments of Fear podcast returns! I didn’t expect this at all, but hadn’t given up hope. Listening to Rachael Nisbet and Peter Jilmstad discuss gialli can be more entertaining than watching the movies themselves. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/f...

Watched Akira on the big screen (with a laser projector!) for the first time in *mumble* decades. I’ve seen it many times, but today I noticed new details: a Citroen H van, and a tv showing Mito Komon(?). I’ve been watching too much Jonathan Ferguson, b/c I also noted soldiers were carrying SA80s.

Is BitTorrent ok for you? Both of those movies have torrents with English subs and seeders. I think Missing Child Video is the stronger of the two movies.

野良猫かどうかわからなくて、心配した。 Two beautiful cats I met in Shiraoi, near the train station. Very friendly. Wished I could’ve taken them home with me. Not sure if they belong to someone. 北海道にいる猫を助けてくれる会があるか、誰かが知らないか

By any chance, do you have a picture of Evan Byers’ grave in Allegheny Cemetery?

Poignant story and lovely translation. I’d like to see Harada’s movie based on this short story. Guess it comes out next year so I’ll have to wait.

Huh, could’ve sworn Takeuchi’s character died at the end. That gives me an excuse to watch it again :-). I think it’s the best “stigmatized property” movie I’ve seen. Uketsu’s books are popular now, so maybe a publisher will take a chance in publishing more Japanese horror in English.

210

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 01/07/2026

The thing I remember most about it is the way Takeuchi’s character died. Disturbing foreshadowing. I haven’t read the book; wonder if it’s available in English.

Can I ask where you found that? I’m visiting Hokkaido in a little while and I’d like to give that a try.

At last, good news from WWDC. Document objects can access the fileURL. Of course, we could do that from the beginning with NSDocument…

000

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 08/06/2026

WWDC this year seemed more obnoxiously smug than usual. I knew they weren’t going to walk back the Liquid Glass mistake but I didn’t expect them to double down on it. I’m not sure if I’m glad or disappointed no one I worked with was speaking this year.

This new film, “健康ちえのわトランポリン教室” (Health Chie’s Trampoline Classroom) looks amazing. It would be cool if someone picked it up for US distribution… youtu.be/wBH8tFTIFFU?...

Thanks! The one called “Alien Szechuan Pork” (異星人回鍋肉) sounded interesting just based on the title. I wish @shudder.com would pick these up for streaming. Or someone would license these from Kadokawa for a physical release.

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 29/04/2026

Where’s it being streamed? The Kadokawa site says something about it being available for rental, but I didn’t see any links. Is there one you particularly like?

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 28/04/2026

Can’t wait. Preordered that a little over three years ago. So, I guess technically I can wait. But I’m happy that the book’s coming out and the wait will end soon-ish.

010

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 14/04/2026

Yeah, that’s probably better because it’s more concise, but captures a disdain for the other Bill. I should watch that movie again. Coen brothers at their peak.

020

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 14/04/2026

Wonder how that was translated into Japanese. いや、そのヤロじゃねんだ。ビルパーカー maybe. I mean, motherscratcher is ambiguous. I don’t think Parker is literally scratching his mother.

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 14/04/2026

No, not that motherscratcher. Bill Parker.

I attended a showing of the incredible documentary Chain Reactions, and got to talk with the director Alexandre O. Philippe. So cool. I had no idea #TexasChainsawMassacre is so important to Takeshi Miike. Also had no idea I’m the same age as both TCM and @horrornonna.com.

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 26/03/2026

Is that the Japanese release from Kadokawa? Looks spiffier than the picture on CDJapan suggests. Wish it had English subs; my Japanese isn’t strong enough to read along in real time.

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 16/03/2026

For Canadian content, there's "Nova Heart" and "Arias & Symphonies" by Spoons. And "Lust for Love" from Images in Vogue's self-titled album.

011

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 16/03/2026

Based on Talk Talk and Tears for Fears, I'd recommend Naked Eyes' self titled album, and Flaunt the Imperfections by China Crisis. I usually think in terms of singles, rather than albums. So, for later 80s, maybe try "Accidentally 4th Street" by Figures on a Beach?

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 20/02/2026

I did a quick check. Looks like the ESP 科学研究所 is still around: www.espnet.co.jp/company/. There are a few videos on YouTube as well, maybe one of them has the content of that tape. I feel myself being pulled down a rabbit hole…

To be fair, that logo looks really cool. I can't read all of the text; it says something at the top about homeostasis? Part of me really wants to listen to that tape now.

120

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 04/02/2026

No problem. I wish the films from later competitions were available; I really want to see the original “Missing Child Videotape” short and I can’t find a legal place to do it.

010

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 04/02/2026

Do you mean ones like “Karakasa” and “Best Wishes to All”?

110

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 30/01/2026

That feels like the plot to a J-Horror film. Woman acquires cool, old jacket. Takes it to the cleaners and then starts wearing it. But little does she know that jacket’s acquired a kami over its long life, a kami which isn’t happy about being disturbed…

130

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 29/01/2026

Sorry, I had thought that was the update message from 15.1, rather than the one from 14.5. But 14.5 is pretty much the end of that era. I sort of regret updating to 14.x; I should have stuck on the last version I worked on. Oh, well.

000

Indoor Miner @indoorminer.bsky.social · 29/01/2026

Those particular updates have been a long time coming. Management had been talking for years about how to monetize the apps. Ironic, since arguably they became more successful when they went free.
