It’s really interesting to me that every philosopher I recognised in this piece is male. Not that female philosophers are immune to professional risks but it recalls to mind Lord of the Flies as a hypothesis not on children’s behaviour, but specifically of privileged male behaviour.

Yeah so just your reminder that cloud storage isn't and never has been *YOUR* storage. If someone doesn't want you to have something, Google *CAN* (and apparently will) delete it for them first and ask questions later.

However long it’s been, I can still feel humbled in my trauma healing journey by the casual reflexive kindnesses of people who grew up fully loved & supported. Like the phrase “let’s find out together” 😭 straight to the soul, that one.

Data centres are hell-bent on further bloating their already-massive energy hunger. The fact they mostly fake support new renewables is part of what makes them such a huge threat to climate goals and such a warm friend to fossil fuels. New vid + piece here: thepoint.com.au/opinions/260...

Saw this heavily pregnant possum stroll out in daylight, heedless of the very curious pedestrians admiring her, going for what I guess is the possum equivalent of a midnight snack. Soothing some cravings? I got as close as I thought would be polite for the photo.
Photo of a brushtail possum in daylight, sitting on a cracked old concrete footpath next to a bush with flowers and a leaf-littered storm grate, grabbing one of the flowers in its hands for a snack.

The thing about "literacy as gatekeeping" is that literacy is a learned thing, not a taught thing. IME, any given communicator is *aching* for you to engage with their text, and will happily give you the tools if they can, but the limiting factor is you, yourself.

Believe Women is an epistemological stance. It doesn't mean you assume that every single woman is telling the truth and women never lie. It means you understand that in the system that we exist in, there's much more risk and pain for women coming forward about abuse than there is anything to gain.

I like this. Though when feedback channels are through forms rather than in-person, a limitation of the format is the inability to ask questions to guide feedback. An interesting tension since I’ve seen forms create that interpersonal barrier specially to protect from unempathetic feedback.

So very about this, yes Reminds me of the “cinema sins” problem in fandom too, if critique is not “which character is best/worst” sometimes it’s just “where are the holes” when what I prefer is the conversation; “if this is true, then what does that mean in this context, and how do I feel about it?”

Kind of love that the conversation spoke about what we did in the past (squatted and built public housing) when there were rising encampments of people experiencing homelessness here: theconversation.com/homeless-cam...

Homeless camps are rising as affordability falls. It’s a problem Australia has solved before
In the 1940s, tent cities and ‘shanty’ settlements appeared across Australia, as families struggled to find homes. The government acted then – and needs to now.

I hate to harp on about any study that only shows binary gender results, but shout out to the Aussie-wide student surveys from last year showing that while men were more likely to be bored, women were more stressed by care/work/life balance, & men 2x likely to be offered a job worth leaving uni for
Table showing "Reason for considering early departure" (from uni) with columns for "Female" and "male".

Difficulty with study workload 39.3% / 30%
Study / life balance 35.1% / 27.9%
Course expectations not met 26.7% / 31.2 %
Paid work responsibilities 28.6% / 21.6%
Lack of academic support 24.1% / 21.1%
Boredom/lack of interest 18.1% / 26.5%
Lack of connection to institution 21.3% / 22%
Family caring responsibilities 20.1% / 13.9%Table on reasons for considering early departure from uni, second column female results, third column male results

People can say it’s utopian or dreamy but it’s a fact that you have to believe new things are possible, fundamentally, in order to make them real. You have to make the choice to believe that more than this is possible & not be resigned to this being the way things have to be because it’s not at all.

Just got this beautiful photo of the Butterfly Club foyer, in honour of its closing down. I stood in front of it and felt like I was back there and burst into tears, so, I had to take it home. I think this is the hardest that any photography has ever hit me. Thank you to Lucky Frawley.
Photo of a photo (framed) of the foyer of the now-defunct Butterfly Club in Melbourne. At the centre is a small crt tv screen, glowing green, bearing the words: “THREATRES [please wait to be ushered]”. Around it are a myriad of shelves cluttered with books, knick-knacks, lamps, fairy lights. On the wall hang masquerade masks and large paintings. In the foreground to the left are two empty plush chairs facing the viewer; to the right is an open doorway with stairs leading upwards.

Game prep this week. Jaffa keeping us company during the card sorting was cute. (In classic cat form, she did destroy a pile or two before settling up on the couch to watch us)
Photo of a loungeroom, looking across a floor covered in piles of stacked cards and medium-sized open boxes, to a grey couch with lots of cushions; on the end of which is a sleeping fluffy cat, tail wrapped around to hide her face.

It honestly gives me heart when folks older than me are shocked with how long it’s been since something happened, how old they feel, how much it feels like something happened “just yesterday”. I hope to keep feeling like my favourite memories happened just yesterday for another 30 yrs, too 🤗

Felt a tiny bit like a human on Sunday, just managing things around fatigue. I know summer is going to be a killer but I do really miss it right now
Selfie of indigodecay; medium brown hair in a mullet being buffeted gently by the wind, a small smile, wearing a black jacket and shirt with a choker and other necklaces dangling down. Standing in front of white grating with little patterns of triangles small enough to be covered completely by fingertips, bot large enough to poke through; the triangles are alternating between facing up and down in back-to-back lines. Through the grating in the background, a sunny blue sky is just barely visible.
