I'd love to be considered for indexing if you haven't already secured someone

Am I too late for this? I wrote something for The Indexer about finding the wrong index being published in a book. I couldn't get the press to divulge how it happened. The other horror was a small press that then retypeset the book at a smaller size after I had done the index.

I index for academics and often they are only concerned with the argument their book is putting forth and that's how some topics get missed. If you read the book thinking of it as being on the periphery of another discipline suddenly a lot more gets picked up.

When you say manually, do you mean with index cards? Yes! That's where the name for them comes from. There's software that makes indexing less painful, but it's usually not worth the time to learn it well enough for it to be a time saver for only one book. Most indexers use dedicated software.

Missing entries in an index often reveals the bias of the indexer. It wasn't deemed important enough to pick up. Sometimes that is because the author is indexing the book and they have very particular ideas of what to index. Or the indexer doesn't know how to meet a very short index length.

Ugh. Sounds like not a lot of eyes have looked at that work! There are some publishers I charge more for, because of their lack of diligence on copy editing and proofreading.

There are reports of LLMs creating citations that don't exist, and legal cases that don't exist. The only way to know if something is truly in the book or on the page numbers give, is for someone to check the work of the LLM.

Indexers are often the last set of fresh eyes on a proof. I recently had one of the cleanest proofs I've ever worked on and it had a typo that had been missed by everyone.

Factual errors I point out, or rather I should say I question are layout errors... "the images in these plates do not match the titles or descriptions are you sure they are correct?"

@stephenullstrom.bsky.social has written a good book for non-indexers. There are also indexers such as myself who will provide a review and feedback of your index for a fraction of the cost of an index.

Don't focus solely on your contribution to the field, that is only your peers. Include interdisciplinary scholars and the undergrads! You do need to index information that might seem obvious or old hat to you, but could be a learning opportunity for someone new to the field.

I was just wrapping up a book on contemporary music and so the concept of the supergroup band was in my brain. I imagined indexers already famous in their own right, coming together to form a three or four-headed indexer or indexing company that focuses on music. Tagline: we never miss a beat.

URGENT: As his senior human made the noble decision to choose MAID, Morley is in need of a second forever home. She’d like him to be with her until her very last day, which is intended to be May 18.
Meet Morley! He is a sweet 7 year old sweet, affectionate boy who has been doated on by his human since the day he was adopted by her. Morley has his own seat, his own recliner and has never been told no when he asks for a snack.
Morley loves to spend his days curled by beside his human on the couch to nap. He is a little shy with people that he does not know but once he gets to know you, or you call his name, he will show you affection affection.
While Morley is an indoor cat, he loves to watch the birds in his backyard. So much so, he has learned how to open the shutters to see out the window!
Availability: May 19, 2026
Location: Stratford, Ontario
🏡 Morley is looking for a second forever home without children or other animals. He is looking for a quiet home, with someone who will make him the centre of attention and love him just as deeply as his human did.
His human is hoping to keep him until her last day on May 18, and have Morley move to his second forever home on May 19, if possible.
If you are interested in adopting Morley, email melanie@mygrandfatherscat.ca with the subject line MORLEY See less

Hear you! The first year is strange, especially if it comes after a long time of living with the 'quirks'. I just finished my first Sjogren's awareness month & while I'm glad to know where my 'quirks' come from, I'm having difficulty adopting summertime best practices (sunshine intensifies !!)

I once indexed a podcast host I'd listened to for a few years and based on the book's topic it was unexpected. "What's he doing in here?" I love those little moments of what seem to be outliers in the index.

It was an oversight by the author and the editor missed it. It is also Arabic and so transliterations of names are all over the place. It was one part translated title and one part uncommon transliteration.

I've just come across a translated titled in the book I'm indexing! Query into the author especially as this is a wonderfully edited book so it might be intentional. It's the only error or questionable bit I've come across in this book, which is rare!

Indexers use the title given in the book and then sort the index entries based on the alphabet. I would never expect to see École des Beaux-Arts under S for School...! People want the version of the actual book that was consulted, because not all books have the same pagination among other things.

I think it's simultaneously this and the fact that many enthusiasts seem to have a narrow sense of what job tasks are/can look like. There's a lot of "you don't understand what AI can do" coming at some of us and a legitimate response is "you don't understand what I can do, and need to, in my job."

Ask about production process in detail. Many large publishers rely on third party vendors for production who are implementing many cost saving (to them) measures. Those short cuts affect the result, which may show up in your book and can't be fixed unless there is a second printing.

Having an index makes it easier to find something you read in the book a while ago. having an index makes it easier for people to use your book for education purposes, be that teaching or their research/writing

If you do this again, I'd suggest looking in the index as a way to find related ideas and the bibliography as a means to find other related books. So many indoctrinated in the digital think the index is "just like the find/search function" but it's much more than that.
