This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

What’s missing: 1/ Any framing about what higher is or has been that misses the big public investment post-WW2 and then massive disinvestment starting in the 1980s which spirals into rising costs and student debt is disingenuous at best. 5/

Initially I was frustrated with the rise of self-checkout but I appreciated how stores passed the savings on to me rather than pocket the money, fire armies of workers & make me do a job I suck at. It’s also why I’m optimistic about AI! I have been kicked in the head by several horses.

Also: I'm grateful to be a tenure-track faculty member in a supportive department, at a university with very attainable tenure standards, and I move through the world as a straight, white, able-bodied man. I broadly don't have to worry about student evaluations, and that also makes this easier.

Obviously this doesn't work for every class, or even every class session--we're doing a digital archives project in November which would be silly to run low-tech. But overall I just wish I'd done this ages ago.

Not only are more students engaged, they're more engaged *with each other* and that's what has really made the difference: the ban on screens is most palpably felt in the sense of classroom community, which then produces more dynamic conversations.

Sample size of one and in a new course to boot but I instituted a "no phones no laptops" policy (with exceptions for accommodations) for my undergrads this semester and we're already having better conversations this semester than we were at any point in previous semesters.

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

First week of semester five at UL in the books, featuring new syllabi numbers nine and ten. Things can be difficult here, our students and many of my colleagues deserve better (Athletics deserves worse). But what a joy to get to teach this dream-slate of classes.
A photo of a desk taken from above, featuring two printed syllabi: one with the title "Modern and Contemporary Poetry" featuring a photo of Gertrude Stein and her dog; another with the title "Experimental Poetics" featuring a photo of Nathaniel Mackey. Other assorted desk items (keyboard, mouse, sticky notes) partially visible at the edges.

Among the singularly recognizable enclaves of poetic enunciation--say, Shandong in 740, Paris in 1857, Havana in 1931, or what have you--I would rank Buffalo in 1991 pretty highly.

It (nearly) lives! Forthcoming from OUP in November or December! My first reaction, for once, was glee — though the terror of writing a book is that it’s never finished. Eek! Woohoo! Wild to have proofs in hand!!!!
Title page of forthcoming book by me, titled Nineteenth-Century Poetry and Cosmologies of the Human: Worlds Unmanned. From Oxford UP.Table of contents for forthcoming book.

Introduction: Poetry, Person, Planet — with subsections on William Wordsworth; Sylvia Wynter and lyricization; climate, affectability, impress; and criticism, canonicity, and counterbumanism.

First chapter on Wordsworth, Charles Lyell, and c19 manscapes — with subsections on Wordsworth’s and Lyell’s lyric theologies, the pathetic fallacy (Ruskin) and Wynter on desperate realization, and apostrophizing Toussaint Louverture.

Second chapter on Tennyson’s In Memoriam, the possibilities and limits of posthumanism, and ambivalent reading — with subsections on extinction and apostrophe.

Third chapter on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the problem of reference, and infrastructures of reading — with subsections on Swedenborgianism, sphericity, plantation inheritances, and the slippages of rhyme.

Fourth chapter on Phillis Wheatley, extractivism, extractionist reading, and salvage criticism—with subsections on solar intergumanism, allusion, reticence, and refusal.

Coda on contemporary representations of climate collapse, Wynter on transumption, and the afterlives of c19 aesthetic imaginaries.

We also argue that what we mean by infrastructure and how it gears into literary questions looks quite different when viewed through poetic form. It's the piece of scholarly writing that I'm most proud of, and it was a joy to write with and learn from the brilliant (and social-media-less) Claire.

It also includes an introduction by Claire and myself, where we situate our intervention into the overly-narrative "infrastructural turn" in literary studies and make the case for infrastructuralism as an already-extant (and particularly vibrant) methodological tradition in poetry and poetics.
