Kyiv. Early Sunday evening. I went to have warcoffee at my favourite place. Drones? Frequent uninvited ‘guests’ during the day. One of the bridges was hit earlier. People are out, doing the same as I do: living their lives.

Remarkable: an industry that is dying because it can't compete in the market writes a Republican president, asking him to keep the industry alive by brute force, and he says, ok. What would it take for the GOP to lose its reputation as the "free market" party? Seriously, what would it take?

These days there’s so much talk of a nightmare waiting for Kyiv: we’ll freeze with no water or electricity, and strikes on bridges connecting the two banks will cause a logistical collapse… I don’t say times are or will be easy. But I stay in Kyiv. This panic benefits russia.

It's not "polarization." It's "incompatible political regimes." Polarization is what happens within a liberal democracy, but the MAGA party has rejected liberal democracy (bc fascism is for losers & they've already lost the future under liberal democracy). Democracy v Fascism isn't "polarization."

You can't get anyone in political media to say it plainly, but GOP strategy for several decades now has been built around the fact that its core goals/policies are *wildly unpopular*. Everything depends on a) polluting the information environment, b) cementing unfair structural advantages, & c) $$$.

And so it continues... Our economic debates seem utterly disconnected from the reality. That reality: This is an economy mostly creating healthcare jobs, and it does so month after month, and everything else is just noise.
Line chart titled "Effectively all of the net job creation has been in healthcare and social assistance, and jobs are shrinking in the rest of the economy" showing change in non-farm payrolls since January 2025 through September 2026. Healthcare and social assistance added 998,000 jobs with consistent growth throughout the period, while the rest of the economy lost 222,000 jobs, meaning all net job creation came from healthcare. The rest of the economy showed particular weakness from May through August 2025 when losses reached 218,000 jobs. This striking divergence reveals an unusual concentration where one sector's growth of roughly 48,000 jobs per month has offset persistent contraction across all other industries combined.
