Realizing interred is not the right word here. Interned? Imprisoned.

Fun fact about Kemper Freeman: His family wealth comes from his grandfather developing land confiscated from interred Japanese-Americans, a policy he also loudly advocated for as the founder of the Anti-Japanese League of Washington.

Ode to the Half-Broken by Suzanne Palmer is one of the best books I’ve read in years. I also have a limited tolerance for trauma/pain in fiction, and the book touches on dark topics but is very hopeful.

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

Come to the PNW coast with all the warning signs about sneaker waves and tsunami zones and being crushed by giant logs tossed up on shore by the sneaker waves and tell me space is the bigger threat!

I've been part of periodic "are you more afraid of the sea or of space" discussions, and my position is, however much harder space will kill you, you have to try really hard to get to it. The sea can come FIND YOU, even when you're minding your own business!

This is getting beyond my knowledge, but I can tell you the rulemaking attorneys I worked with took addressing comments very seriously. Superficial responses are prob not an easy APA violation, but could still be a basis for slower litigation.

Lorelei @ielerol.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
I’m not an expert tho, just someone who has been tangentially involved in a rulemaking, and has gotten guidance from APA experts on making comments on proposed rules.
030 3
Lorelei @ielerol.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
If comments aren’t addressed, that’s a basis for violation of the APA. If an agency says they don’t believe harms warned of in the comments will happen, and then they do happen, that’s potential evidence that the rulemaking was “arbitrary and capricious.”

Lorelei @ielerol.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
The Administrative Procedure Act requires public comment on proposed rules, and also requires that all substantive comments be addressed in the final rule, either by modifying the rule to mitigate possible harms, or explain why the agency doesn’t believe harm will result.

so to be clear, the city didn't "give up." the last time they painted over the mural, sitting city council members alexis mercedes rinck and joy hollingsworth personally helped scrub the paint off, effectively rendering hot rat summer an official city monument.

Even the most rustic homemade whole wheat bread is made with ingredients that have been ground, physically kneaded, chemically altered via leavening, and then baked. Meanwhile potato chips have been: sliced, and cooked.

Every time people ask me where I stand on Pluto as a planet, I advocate moving beyond the human desire to categorize and recategorize things and instead appreciate Pluto for the incredible body it is. The idea of Pluto should never be more powerful than Pluto itself!

As a Pluto scientist, it's wild to "make Pluto a planet again" while decimating the careers of those of us that study it! The idea of dominance in space and planetary science supersedes the actual practice of planetary science.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

There are places where Trump, as president, has broad freedom of action. And there are places where Trump, as president, has been able to act unilaterally because the main point of opposition, Congress (and SCOTUS), support his program. (1/?)

Do you see how an act is not, as young men think, like a rock that one picks up and throws, and it hits or misses, and that's the end of it. When that rock is lifted, the earth is lighter; the hand that bears it heavier.

Been thinking a lot about one of my favorite quotes from Lois McMaster Bujold. "about cynicism...the universe's most supine moral position. Real comfortable. If nothing can be done, then you're not some kind of shit for not doing it, and you can lie there and stink to yourself in perfect peace."
