Companies like OpenAI need to be held to account for the social harms caused by their products, especially when they’re run by executives who are so open about placing such little value on the wellbeing of humanity. But that also requires governments to wake up. disconnect.blog/sam-altmans-...
As far as I’m concerned, there are two big takeaways here. The first is that OpenAI, Altman, and the generative AI industry more widely needs to start feeling the pressure. They’ve had a pretty easy ride these past three years, as they made big promises, caused hundreds of billions of dollars to flow in their direction, and generated a slew of social harms they haven’t had to properly account for. This technology is being pushed by people who not only disregard human life, but seek to subsume it to computers, and it’s time they’re not only reined in but seriously questioned and held to account for what they’re doing.

But beyond that is to question what our governments are doing by not just welcoming the industry, but often actively pushing generative AI throughout the public sector and into the private sector too. In response to the Journal’s revelations, Canada’s AI minister said he was “deeply disturbed” and reached out to OpenAI for answers. But he’s more of an AI evangelist than someone seeking to really understand the impacts of the technologies and take action to rein them in. His response to the recent Grok deepfake scandal was little more than a secular version of “thoughts and prayers.”

OpenAI is a menace. Two recent stories make that clearer than ever. One day you have Sam Altman denigrating humanity to defend AI. The next, WSJ reveals OpenAI could have alerted Canadian police of a potential mass shooter, but refused pressure from employees. That person went on to kill 8 people.

Silicon Valley’s alliance with Donald Trump was a mask off moment and showed the world we can’t depend on US tech companies. For the past few months, I’ve been trying to get off US tech and I put together a guide so you find alternatives too. I hope you find it helpful!

Japanese printmaker Koichi Sakamoto (b. 1932) is known for his detailed intaglio prints, specifically using the mezzotint etching technique. His work often focuses on serene, snow-covered landscapes and traditional Japanese winter village scenes, characterized by a muted, monochromatic palette.
This is a mezzotint etching by Japanese artist Koichi Sakamoto.
The work is titled "Late at Night."
It depicts a serene winter landscape with traditional farmhouses with thatched roofs covered in a thick layer of snow.

Galway shawls were a type of heavy-weight shawl once worn by Irish women. Firmly believe we lost our way as a nation when we stopped wearing items that doubled as cosy blankets and would like to propose a return to the wearable bed. Galway shawl (and lyric) prints: www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...
Image of my Galway shawl print (with some of the lyrics to the song of the same name) overlaid on a background of a photograph showing two women wearing Galway shawls.

I bet he’s just going to get super cozy with them both and sell Ontario, and Canada, out. I have no faith in a man that’s called himself a republican and a supporter of Trump. Those who voted for him should be ashamed of themselves.

This is honestly one of the reasons I’ve contemplated leaving IG. All my creative sessions were peppered with thoughts of how whether anyone there would like it. It prevented me from following my ideas and trying new things. I’m trying to push past that to just create for the sake of creating.

I’m at the point in my career where I would sooner take a pay cut and work for a smaller organization, or even switch industries, than work for a company that refuses to respect and protect people. I’ve been there before. It was the most soul crushing experience. Never again.

It is an absolute deal breaker for me if a company does not have measures in place to prevent literal hate crimes or harassment against vulnerable people (or anyone for that matter). Even if they have a strong DEI program, I keep my guard up as that can absolutely just be performative.

As an artist, one of the things I love about painting is entering into the flow state where I’m in the moment and it’s just me and my art. Having to spend part of that moment documenting “the human effort” feels akin to stopping mid-meditation to respond to a work email.

We need to fight the doom feeling. Doom means action is meaningless. You know who loves the idea of that? The people in power causing the problem. If we feel disempowered and like everything is pointless than they’ve won. They get what they want without a fight. Their worst nightmare is a fight.

I used to work for a tech company. The second I realized what I was aiding and abetting I got out. It was easy for me because I have a partner and no children and financially we would be ok. But I feel for employees at those companies who can’t make as easy an escape as I could.

All social media did was isolate us from each other and profit off it. We need to engage in our IRL communities and we can’t do that if our attention is drawn to a tiny screen in our hands. Social media brings people together as effectively as changing your profile photo combats racism.
