23,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules. That’s the amount of heat the oceans absorbed in 2025. A number so huge it’s almost meaningless…until you realise it’s roughly 40× humanity’s annual energy use. The ocean is buying us time. We’re running out of it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

World’s oceans absorbed record heat equal to 40 times annual global energy use
The injection of thermal energy comes amid an increasing rise in sea levels and continuing acidification

Another year with sea ice cover well-below “normal” (whatever that means now). The start of the spring melt has been very rapid; hopefully that’s just weather but I suspect that the west Antarctic sea ice is thin and will melt quickly

News from me: Antarctica’s winter sea ice has peaked at its third-lowest level on record, falling a million square kilometres – or almost 400,000 square miles – short of the long-term average, scientists have confirmed. "This is not a future problem. It’s a now problem.”

Nepal disaster analysis “revealed a huge rock landslide had indeed occurred. “The glacier just came along for the ride,” Ekström says.” This doesn’t change the reality that glaciers WILL collapse with climate change, and cause similar problems. Just not this time. www.science.org/content/arti...

One way to avoid the impacts of extreme weather on Antarctic research is to completely gut funding and logistical support for that research. Problem solved…

Extreme weather is making Antarctic research harder, but new technology is providing some answers – new study
There’s a greater need than ever to understand how climate change in Antarctica will have global consequences – but research if getting more difficult.

A significant part of me thinks we should move away from “scenario” based projections, and focus on warming levels (“at 2C warming the world will look like…”). The experiment protocols don’t necessarily need to change, just how we present the output

As a climate science communicator I’m told that it’s important to finish on a message of hope. But honestly, what does it say about us as a society that a month long illegal war has been a greater motivator of decarbonisation than decades of environmental degradation and threat to our own wellbeing?

Genuine question for any #arctic experts; does Lake Huron actually ice shelves? An ice shelf -typically 100s of meters thick and thousands of km in area - is the floating extension of a glacier or ice sheet. This sounds more like a chunk of lake ice that broke off. bbc.com/news/article...

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to each year from 1979 to 2024 as shown with thin lines in colors from purple to white. This graph is for Baffin Bay.
