iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Do you actually need a little vtuber in the corner of the screen telling you what you should feel about what you're watching? You can probably work it out on your own without a lot of effort.

I love you, letterboxd reviewers, but if I read one more review that says Cookie Queens didn't take a stance on its subject matter...

Olive, in Cookie Queens, saying 'It's technically child labor' about the Girl Scout Cookie program.

(The Emma M. Lion books are amazing, too. We're only three books in, but I strongly recommend them. Think Pride and Prejudice with more irritated sarcasm, or maybe what it would look like if Lorelai Gilmore lived in Victorian England, idk.)

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 29/09/2026

We've been reading "The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion," and Emma notes a phrase she likes from Emerson's "Self Reliance:" "God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." And I can't help but think that this is both a lovely poetic phrase and also wildly dangerous in the wrong hands.

Read another article where OpenAI put out a press release to the extent of, "whoopsie, we hacked into government computers by accident this time, we're exploring how to prevent that in the future," and everyone treats this as part of doing business instead of a literal admission of a crime.

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 23/09/2026

I stumbled upon this article too, and while overall I disliked it, that specific sentence tells you in big neon letters all you need to know about the person she was talking to, doesn't it?

Continually training myself to not reply to good ideas with "that's actually a good idea," because it risks sounding like it should end with "...for a change." It's possible I overthink things.

The foot in the door

four frame comic. each frame has the text on top in white. first frame shows jk rowling. second frame shows trump and erdogan in suits doing thumbs up. third shows the istanbul landscape. fourth shows Talarico giving a speech in front of the podium. text reads:
"protecting the children"
has become the foot in the
door of fascism.
last weekend (sept. 12th-13th),
under the pretense of "protecting
the children," trump's turkish
bestie erdogan led a massive
anti-lgbtq crackdown.
in an extraordinary esca-
lation, legal proceedings were
announced against 160 people.
about 50 activists have been
arrested. associations and
homes have been ransacked
across the country.
so when we hear people who
are supposedly our allies use
the same language as erdogan,
we owe it to our turkish
siblings to call it out.

I wish there was a Clippy thing that pops up on GitHub, like, "Hey, I noticed that you are splitting your comments into separate sections with `##` headers and even took the time to format a table in Markdown. Are you _sure_ you aren't trying to have Claude Code submit a PR?"

There is no good outcome for Mr. Manolo here. Bovino is going to profit off him either way. The only thing you can do is show everyone that is watching that you will not be intimidated, and you stand up. Because that's how you show other people that they can stand up, too.

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 24/08/2026

Two: the people at the bakery tell you to pound sand, and you get to talk about how unfairly you were treated by these immigrants, and rile up a base of support. And money.

120

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 24/08/2026

So if you're Bovino, you show up at the bakery. One of two things happens. One: you take a selfie eating a donut and then send out a press release about how the people with the ICE OUT NOW sign in their window were happy to see you, and the right people understand you can push these people around.

110

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 24/08/2026

Mr. Bovino certainly has been busy since Trump fired him, right?

Google News search of "greg bovino," showing he's going around to lots of far-right events in the last few months.

Ryan C. Gordon @icculus.icculus.org · 24/08/2026

So naturally, when Greg fucking Bovino showed up at the bakery today, Mr. Manolo kicked him the fuck out.

Okay, so when ICE rolled through Charlotte, a central point of resistance was Manolo's bakery. This was where people came to organize, protest, and eat churros. Manolo Betancur, the owner, has long been an outspoken advocate for the immigrant community in East Charlotte.

Also I keep thinking about the Counting Crows needle drop and vacillating between "that was a weird choice" and "that was absolute mad genius," and I hope to resolve this in my head at some point.

I think my problem with Camp Miasma is that my expectations were _so high_ after I Saw the TV Glow that nothing was ever going to meet them. It just felt very trivial in comparison. Miasma has its merits, but I feel like TV Glow probably saved someone's life, you know? That's a hard act to follow.

Fun fact: I drove 35 minutes to see I Want Your Sex at an arthouse theater tonight, and while I applaud Olivia Wilde's excellent performance, not a single character in the film came to the conclusion that the solution to their problems is unionization. Cookie Queens: 1, Olivia Wilde: 0

Week three of landing in Charlotte, walking into my house, dumping all the clothes in my backpack into the washing machine, and then leaving a few hours later for another flight. Promoting a movie is fun, but it's exhausting. It's in theaters this week, though! cookiequeensfilm.com
