The complete lack of plan or any form of intelligent take on this is from them is so frustrating/disappointing yet also entirely unsurprising

The use of energy constantly overlaps with caloric theory instead of a mental model that we can use to simplify/avoid descriptions. There are so many basic observations with particle motion that never surface. Which is faster, water particles in the liquid state or air particles at the same temp?

I wish there were better agreement and discourse on some of those misconceptions. To me it is wild that there isn't an outcry that you cannot describe a heterogeneous mixture as a solid/liquid/gas. Chocolate is not a solid, it's a suspension of multiple things. Even the correction misses it.

Reading @cmooreanderson.bsky.social ‘s new book. I agree with this a lot and something I’m curious about is if lazy responses could be faulty thinking. When a student avoids thinking, accessing their meaning, usually through a coded association.

To me it reads as someone who went through a sub-par learning experience as a kid and is nostalgic about it. They avoid seeking good examples of constructivist teaching and fail to develop using an quality examples. The H2O component in particular unveils a lot to me.

A retort that I liked was "if you're going to cite the research, cite the research" meaning if you're going to claim research supports a claim, tell where specifically you found it and ideally the conditions of the experiment

meanwhile, several of us have great experience with teacher collaboration through previous trainings but we rarely utilize it. It feels like we end up with the worst of both worlds.

This is a huge source of frustration for me recently. The push for alignment has been so narrow and reductive, but I also want the benefits of collaboration, reflection, and feedback while learning with other teachers. All our focus is on gathering data, but the data isn't informative.

Well, debating teacher autonomy versus teaching consistency is all the rage on LinkedIn, apparently. But when a well balanced post is written, hardly anyone reads it. People still want one-sided hot takes, it seems. christianmooreanderson.com/the-problem-...
A graph with two axes:
X = Collectively gain capacity (discretionary capacity made available by coordinating a way of teaching).
Y = Teacher's retained autonomy (discretionary capacity still available for coordinating a way of doing a curriculum).
There are two positions with higher teacher autonomy than collectively gained capacity: Siloed teaching, and systems in which there are shared general ideas.
The other positions gain more from coordinating. Shared scripts gives the worst outcome in terms of collectively gained capacity and teacher autonomy (giving the system a low capacity). Shared curricular EdTech platforms reduce the teacher's autonomy to low levels also, but can offer greater capacity through, for example, compiling lots of data on learning. Shared lesson structures and activities across teachers retains some teacher autonomy (the teacher can still decide what to say and do in lessons), and there are some gains from collective capacity through the networked sharing of ideas and resources. Finally, the best position for preserving teacher autonomy and gaining from coordination is a system of shared teacher principles and emergent resources. All is explained in the post.

Outraged by the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, a wilderness survival trainer spent years undercover climbing the ranks of right-wing militias. He didn’t tell police or the FBI. He didn’t tell family or friends. The one person he told was a ProPublica reporter. (Published Jan. 2025)

The study cited can’t be extrapolated to the scale of the ocean. Thus article promotes greenwashing instead of informing.

Everything you’re saying is true, but my guess is that not incentivizing attendance probably causes more stress and harm. It varies for different students, but optional school is bonkers unhealthy for many.

I'd say if we want braver legislators we need better media coverage. The slant and massive funding for conservative media causes so much damage for Dems that don't seek bipartisanship. Not sure how we get there though.

You can hate Bayer/Mansanto all you want, but the science of glyphosate is that it's a miracle for the environment and for the health of people who apply pesticides/herbicides. The lawsuits against it are baseless to push more spending in the wellness industry.

I wouldn't mind if ICE was used to target people who write stupid comments on the internet. They'd just track them down irl and humiliate them in front of their co-workers who'd post the video for me to watch.

I think a relevant issue that doesn't get enough discussion is the challenge admin face with polarized departments. I hear from so many teachers about implementation of weak curricula, and the rationale is often about avoiding having to manage multiple teaching philosophies.

If the field were to widen to include better teachers such as yourself I think much of that can be corrected. But there is a difficulty in many teachers being drawn to simplicity that allows them to justify their current methods.

ibchemmilam.bsky.social @ibchemmilam.bsky.social · 04/01/2026
In my view they reduced teaching too much in an effort to simplify complex interactions. That's why there was an over-emphasis on "learning" but an underemphasis on "thinking". Truly many of those though probably have had minimal interaction with great teaching.

I think the "I do, we do, you do" isn't great for procedural knowledge either with the exception of when the teacher isn't very smart. Most teachers that do well with it, are limited by weak conceptual understanding. But that conceptual understanding is relevant to procedures.
