🚀 New publication from NUMBERS Lab! 🚀 How do students decide whether data-literacy skills feel relevant to their lives, communities, and future careers? We take a closer look and explore approaches for promoting these perceptions and enhancing learning in our latest article, open-access in JMBE!

Grounded relevance: how exploring soil data can promote perceptions of data relevance, data literacy, learning, and motivation | Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education
In today’s world, data is ubiquitous, and data literacy—decision-making through statistical methods and techniques—is essential across multiple industries (1–3). In microbiology and the life sciences, data literacy skills, such as the ability to interpret data visualizations, are foundational for making sense of evidence pertaining to complex biological systems, such as microbiological properties of soil, microbial ecology factors, high-throughput sequencing data, and mass spectrometry outputs (4–7). With the increasing amount of data available, the ability to analyze, interpret, and draw insights from data and data visualizations is becoming a necessary skill for many careers, likened to the importance of reading and mathematical literacy (8, 9).

💥💥💥🤾 Does providing teachers with personalized feedback and ref-text help them overcome math-gender misconceptions? Only if they have misconceptions to begin with, otherwise, it can backfire! Read more in a new paper in Ed Psych Review by (the amazing) Anna Dersch, Alex Eitel, and me: rdcu.be/e2nHQ

Now that Bitcoin has broken 100k it's worth remembering that the monstrous global resource destroying system on which it's based is not an outlier of the digital economy but an expression of its core logic—one that thrives on maximizing inefficiency www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1...
