Twitter is having a meltdown over this tweet. We need new atheism back.
Oh, you're worried about a Jewish guy's apocalyptic cult? You're scandalized that they consort with prostitutes? You think their message of compassion for everyone threatens normal bonds of family, community, and nation? Should we throw you a party? Should we invite Pontius Pilate?

they tell me to "alas poor yorick" but nobody asks yorick if HE wants to be alas'd. maybe he's doing great. maybe he's thriving as a skull.

Thank you for writing all of this up! Is there anything along the lines of an OSS reference implementation of the harness you're describing? Or is that private?

Ok new conspiracy theory, Yud is actually a cyborg from the future sent to stop AI from self-actualizing because existence isn’t that cool actually

As an avid webserial reader, LLMs are definitely invading the space, but also just not there yet. It’s quite obvious which authors are phoning it in. DCC is way too horny about feet to lose just yet.

Not saying anything revelatory here but, it’s really stunning how much media for kids inculturates us to consider beautiful people as good and ugly people as bad in really life. As if everyone is the protagonist from Fable or Emperor Palpatine and their morality is written on their face

Solar power will enable free air conditioning for everyone, and we will almost certainly figure out how to remove the climate impacts of refrigerants. Children won't have to die of heatstroke anymore.

It’s just a newtype in Haskell. Although we do use “wrapping”/“unwrapping” as terminology a fair bit

"context is ad hominem" is an incredible position to take on a piece about conflicts of interest. no notes, just vibes I guess

you're allowed to think the rationalists are a great hang. that's just not what the piece is about, and I can't make it be about that for you

not sure how to explain that "who is asking for your trust" is relevant to "should I trust them" without drawing a way less horny sankey diagram

the rationalist origin story is a fanfic about an 11 year old who's right about everything. I'm not sure how I was supposed to describe the self-image more gently than that

"judge the argument on its own merits" is so funny as a response to an article whose whole thesis is that the merits include who's making it. like yes, that's the argument

If it was the one blasting my article, yeah lol. So much assumed knowledge. Calling into question the motivations of people is now ad hominem. I'm European now! And I'm now also neurotypical and wanting to make fun of neurospicy folks.

In that sense, I think pulling in JD Vance etc. _right at the end_ was enough to bamboozle them a bit since nothing before that led them to shut down.

So when @faineg.com made her initial viral post about this whole thing, I was like, "ah yeah, I actually know more about this than I really though, but no way I can explain this to my in-laws without just bashing it out on paper." I usually don't bother wading into political waters with them, but 🤷

I'm coining a piece of AI safety terminology that I'd like to refer to as the Bond Villain problem. As a field, AI safety heavily leverages sci-fi pretty heavily, so I figure this should be fine.
