Heat pumps are the most efficient heating technology ever invented. They harvest and compress pre existing heat in the air, ground or water and transport it where it is needed. That energy is all around us. And it does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

I just boarded a Cherriots bus to go home and I'm delighted to report that the operator is telling us about how this line used to be a streetcar line. It ran from downtown to the state's only penitentiary.

It was great to talk with @wilsonxcassie.bsky.social about the importance of transit in Salem, Keizer, and beyond. Now, more than ever, public transit is a ready-made solution for so many of Oregon's problems, whether that is slowing economic growth or low school attendance rates. Let's fund it!

A new study reports that almost half of all urban and suburban US car owners are open to living car free. We need to significantly increase the level of transit service across the US to enable people make that *choice*. Without adequate service, we force people into $$ depreciating assets (cars).

90,000 in Marion and Polk County depend on SNAP. In two days, because of failures at the highest level of our federal government, our neighbors will not receive SNAP food assistance. In response, beginning November 1, 2025, Cherriots riders traveling to and from food banks may ride at no cost.
Cherriots is offering free rides to and from food banks and pantries starting Nov. 1 through the end of the government shutdown, the transit agency announced Thursday. The agency said it mirrors their free rides to warming shelters. With those rides, passengers just need to tell the driver where they’re going for a free trip.

“With many families facing uncertainty and added stress, we want to ensure that accessing food is never a barrier,” said Allan Pollock, general manager, in a statement. “Our community depends on us, and we are proud to step up for those who need support right now.”

483 employees and almost 1000 positions overall were eliminated at ODOT today. Even when the OR Leg acts the damage has been done. Next time an elected suggests that public transportation isn’t a “core service,” ask them about the tens of millions of rides each year. Are those all luxury trips?

Today, the caucus with a super minority in the lower chamber of the Oregon Legislature released their transportation proposal. I am going to hone in on their plans to drastically cut public transit funding. Their plan is unpopular, bad for Oregon, and acutely bad for rural Oregon. A thread...
Proposed Cuts to ODOT’s biennial budget for 2025-2027 include:
• Statewide Transportation Improvement Fund: $306.7 million
• Reallocate Vacancies: $68.3 million
• Lease Unused Office Space at ODOT Headquarters: $55.9 million
• Bicycle and Pedestrian Program: $47 million
• 3% Agency Staff: $40 million
• Passenger Rail: $38 million
• Vehicle Privilege Tax: $35 million
• Social Equity and Civil Rights Division: $24.9 million

Cherriots doesn't just serve Salem-Keizer. Our vanpool program helps people up and down the Willamette Valley get to work. Oregon Business Magazine recently featured how we help Freres Engineered Wood and Meduri Farms. Supporting public transit supports local businesses in rural Oregon. #orleg
Two page spread from Oregon Business Magazine featuring how Cherriots Vanpool services support Freres Engineered Wood and Meduri Farms compete for staff and stay competitive. Why did Freres decide to start up an employee vanpool program?

Freres runs multiple production facilities, including 24/7 operations, so we have sizable workforce needs. We're rurally located outside of Salem with a fairly limited local labor pool that was significantly reduced after homes were destroyed in the 2020 fires. Employee vanpooling offered a solution that enables us to retain staff living farther away, plus serve our ongoing recruitment efforts.
How did you set up your vanpool program?

We'd heard about vanpool support services being offered by our local transit provider Cherriots, and Commute with Enterprise. Both helped us create a turnkey employee vanpool program. They helped match employees into vanpools onsite and by using cluster maps of home addresses. Commute with Enterprise provided reliable rental vehicles and insurance organized employees into 10 total vanpools, and handled ongoing management. Plus, Cherriots offered a subsidy to offset vanpool costs. Dennis Bell, HR Manager, Meduri Farms

Meduri Farms is a family-owned and operated producer, distributor, and innovator of dried fruit for the food and beverage industry., which boasts a workforce of over 280 employees. Meduri is a global leader in a wide variety of dried fruits, most notably craft-dried blueberries, offered in an array of formats and sizes. Meduri Farm's state-of-the-art headquarters in Dallas, Oregon, include infusion and drying capabilities, a packaging line, R&D capabilities, and an on-site service team

What led Meduri Farms to start an employee vanpool program?

Meduri Farms' dried fruit production facilities are rurally located west of Salem with limited housing and transit options for our employees. Before the pandemic, we'd contracted with the school district to provide a daily Salem shuttle service using their buses to make commuting easier. Yet, bus driver shortages and increased costs led us to start an employee vanpool program that's more cost effective and better accommodates our employees' commute needs

According to Cox Automotive's Kelly Blue Book, the average cost of a new car is $47,577. By continuing to under fund public transit, we require Oregonians to spend thousands to buy and maintain a depreciating asset to leave their own homes. Good public transit provides choice and freedom. #orleg
