Imagine pulling up to your kids' school in a mahogany station wagon suby with this shit. Deeply embarrassing but these people are so out of it they're like "yeah, got 'em." Your kid probably can't read a full book.

Very cool and normal. Also you are driving a Subaru and are parked like an asshole, on top of being in an EV spot. Wow. Neat. Much Ayn Rand. I'll buy your kids spray paint to be shiny and chrome.

If it's a means to a "turn the crank" job (distinct from vocations or crafts), sure, there's maybe some argument for pushing things out expediently. Computers are good at synthesis and... computing--film at 11. This isn't the same as using a graphing calculator in Calc I. It's blunting how to think.

Do I resent that they were done with their problem sets in two evenings vs. four? At the time, a little. But I did learn how to think through problems by sitting with them a bit longer. I suppose it depends on your philosophy on education.

*how not using AI. My undergrad physics degree is a BA because it was from the college of science and arts at my university. I had people in my cohort who knew about this cool thing called "Wolfram Alpha" that I was oblivious. Pages of solving quantum problems with tables of integrals.

They were not. I agree with the stance of "my life as a student was miserable, so yours should be, too" is awful and has no place in academia (or anywhere) but I don't see how using AI to learn how to short cutting thinking about hard problems is remotely hazing or (big WHOA THERE) slavery.

As someone whose first advisor was a guy who smashed a keyboard during a screaming match with his only grad student besides me, and suffered under a verbally abusive postdoc who I am still convinced was trying to sabotage my experiment at best, kill me at worst: this is a really gross and wild take.

It disappeared for a week because of a VIP visit, but a helpful admin helped me locate it in a recent retiree's office where everything that wasn't a glossy document was stashed, and it's since restored to its rightful place in the central suite.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:
Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

Boltzmann is an amazing ESA for alerting on anxiety but man, this dude is not Lassie. Still a good boy. Shout out to the super nice guy who saw me flat on my face taking a moment to regroup and ran over to check on me because I'm sure I looked pretty pathetic.

Lol, I literally ordered a new brace the night before posting this and then ate (uneven) sidewalk during Boltzmann's walk after my ankle rolled. My entire right side hurts (fell to avoid landing on the dog). Leg scraped to shit and now my dominant hand is in a splint for the rest of the week.

My dad called me every night, at 6 pm sharp, on days when he didn't have me. He spent most of his job on work travel. I remember seeing those "AT&T future commercials" and imagining awesome talking to family over video would be. These parents are wack, can't stand their kids, and should be shamed.

Thinking about maybe interval sprint-walking a 5k (fuck running) and all of the local ones that are during cooler weather are trail routes, but my ankle still randomly decides it doesn't want to do the whole "be an ankle thing." Feels bad. I just really like walking : /

Ban these and Class 2 e-bikes. The convenience of micromobility doesn't override pedestrian safety. I see maybe 1 e-bike/week using the brand-fucking-new bike lanes installed by my city. 2 e-scooters and 2 e-bikes nearly hit me on my walk *this morning* alone. All driven by teens.

Billionaires suck for all of the obvious reasons but I'm also amazed at how BORING they are. "I have 20 houses with 80 bedrooms and 500 bathrooms" "Here's my goofy boat with a smaller, goofier boat that goes inside." 100% proof of minimal "merit" due to sheer basic-ass taste and 0 creativity.

TL;DR: people have short memories and most things feel pretty bleak rn. The latter is probably a "me" problem but the average person seems to engage in fairly antisocial behaviors regularly vs. a decade ago. 🤷‍♀️

These parents are squarely middle/upper middle class and I suppose they could be in meetings or something but there's the whole phenomenon of devices all the time and I say this as someone who, as a kid, watched A LOT of cartoons and played video games but also read and learned how to be bored.

Not a parent but I think about how my parents (worked full time, often on weekends) who took down time to talk with me, find inexpensive enrichment opportunities, ask about school, read to me. They had their own lives outside parenting, too, but they liked being around me while also giving me space.

many folks simply do not like spending time with their kids. I get Zoom school was challenging logistically especially for parents who couldn't WFH but 6 years out I see parents at the local community pool sitting in their cars scrolling on their phones while the kids are doing swim team practice.

I went in about 3-4x a week staggered with the rest of my group to total 24ish hours in-office. Office doors were to be kept closed. SF Bay Area, btw. The favorite "oppressive regime" boogeyman along with NY. There's some serious Shazam-style misremembering of early pandemic realities: essential service workers abused by irate, mildly inconvenienced customers, freezer truck morgues, overflowing hospitals w/o PPE

I was deemed essential and had printed a note I was asked to carry in case I was stopped by law enforcement on the way to work. Guess what I *never* needed to use? There was no """"lockdown"""" in the US anywhere.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a NextDoor sob story about how a "vicious" 'yote "attacked" his dogs off-leash dogs and calling for extermination. Just absolutely the worst.

His dogs have no recall, so instead he decided to come up to me less than 2 feet away, yelled gendered slurs, and acted physically threatening. Once he realized there was a witness across the street filming he backed down.

Every time I see him, I remind him about the leash ordinance and mention there's definitely rattlesnakes in the area. For a long time I carried two leashes on walks. Once his dogs ran up on Boltzmann and I yelled from distance he needed to recall them/control them immediately before I did.

I see SO many unleashed dogs and usually remind folks leashes are required in the area. Most leash w/o complaint. One guy is really nasty and lets his 2 off-leash dogs harass Boltzmann in the park and pretends they're game dogs by flushing the wildlife (usually native birds) in the protected area.

Saw this nice neighbor on my morning walk. Kept distance, made loud noises to haze. "Escorted" us away 100 ft+ ahead. My dog is always leashed & gives 0 shits about other dogs/critters. Managed to snap this after we were well away and he'd jumped a wide creek. Surprisingly good zoom on my phone.
Slightly blurry pic ultra zoomed pic of a youngish coyote sitting on the side of a wide creek near a small clearing in some dried grass brush, looking to the right. The 'yote looks healthy, with thick fur. Probably contemplating which ground squirrel would make a good breakfast.

This is after her 2x hospitalization for sepsis a few weeks ago. Losing my mind over this. She's only there because I *can't* take care of her myself yet here I am, taking time off work to do super basic stuff that they're theoretically on the hook to do.
