Look carefully: that slightly darker brown "twig" in the center is not a leaf or a piece of straw. It's the swallowtail chrysalis. I am so glad I saw the chrysalis being formed. Otherwise we might have emptied the potato bin without noticing it. It is very well hidden.

What appears to be a pile of straw. In between the large straw twig center left and the greenish straw center right is what appears to be a slightly darker twig, or a dried leaf. It is not: it is a swallowtail chrysalis.

Found one of our swallowtail caterpillars getting ready to become a chrysalis. 9 of the others seem to have moved on as well, but I have no idea where they are. This is in the potato bed. Since late swallowtail chrysalises overwinter, I guess we will not be harvesting potatoes this year, either! 🤪
