www.newsweek.com/fire-bull-se... “Massive Semen Explosion after Blaze Hits Bull Artificial Insemination Farm: Fire at Yarram Herd Services in Victoria, Australia described as ‘major blow’ for farmers.”

Yeah, I think that’s a good description.
Yarram Herd Services Committee vice chairman Aaron Thomas said the loss of 100 cryogenic cylinders of cattle semen will be a “huge blow” for the farmers.

I can’t help but think of Harry Harlow’s deeply abusive isolation experiments with baby rhesus monkeys left with a mechanical artificial mother. It’s obviously not as extreme as that was but it’s really vile that there is an emerging type of parenting on a spectrum with this.
A baby rhesus monkey clings to a mechanical doll made to appear like a mother monkey in one of Harry Harlow’s “Pit of Despair” experiments.

The babysitting kids had a little disagreement today regarding basketball and then didn’t want to do anything, so I just started doodling mythical creatures and after a bit they joined me. They wanted me to take mine home so here they are if anyone else wants to get colored pencils and join me.
Two sheets of paper with colored-pencil drawings on them. On the left is a Chinese dragon reimagined as a wetlands animal. It hisses at the viewer, tongue out and head ornaments flaring. Its long body is mostly on the lightly vegetated beach but its tail moves visibly in the lake it has just exited. The lake has some lily-like blue plants growing in it. Next to the dragon’s serpentine body is a clutch of four golden eggs. On the right is an unfinished drawing of a kraken, imagined as a squid, which lifts and disassembles an early modern European ship above the surface of the water. The ship and the ten tentacles drip with water. The head of the animal is mostly submerged deep beneath the waves and has colossal red eyes.

I think I’m gonna go with a different mythological figure but it’s crossed my mind so I’m putting it out there that Shiva in his depiction as Nataraja, Lord of the Dance, would be very cool to put together as a Halloween costume. Maybe in the future with more time for technical details.
Copper statue of Shiva as Nataraja from the late 900s AD of Tamil Nadu under the Chola Dynasty. He is depicted under a ring of flames dancing on the dwarf demon Apasmara. Shiva has four arms which hold his various symbols and are posed in elaborate active dance. He wears a crown and the locks of his hair fan out behind him.

The Proto-Indo-European source of our word “oxen” (presumably originally referring broadly to male animals) possibly being etymologically interpreted as “besprinkler” is not funny but I find it funny. This bull is my finest besprinkler. Watch him besprinkle.
The prefix *uks-en- is possibly from the reconstructed root *uks- which has been translated as ‘to sprinkle’. It could also relate to ugw-, relating to ‘wet’ or ‘moist’. Therefore, *uks-en- could be translated to ‘besprinkler’. Another interpretation could take the en- root, meaning ‘onto’, into account, translating the term as ‘to sprinkle onto’.

Over at r/DankChristianMemes, they wanted an announcement post inviting people to celebrate human artistry over using AI-generated imagery and I was picked as writer for that. I needed a meme to act as header image so I decided to make a little homage to Christian art traditions.
The top features The Creation of Adam with God saying “Let us create man in our own image” and Adam responding “I, too, shall create.” What surrounds them is a collage of historical Christian art from around the world.

Images in the meme:

Top center: The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo, created around 1512 for the Sistine Chapel.

Top left: The Archangel Michael by Guido Reni, a Bolognese artist working around 1630.

Top right: Angel of the Revelation by William Blake, working between 1803 and 1805.

Left: A folio showing Christ enthroned from the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the gospels created around 800 AD in Ireland.

Center top: St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, consecrated in 1626 and worked on by various architects.

Center lower left: The revered image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, representing a Marian apparition reported in Mexico City in 1531.

Lower middle center: A mosaic icon of Christ Pantocrator dating to the late 1200s and installed in the Byzantine cathedral of Hagia Sophia.

Upper right middle: A Chinese painting of the Last Supper dating to 1938 by Chen Yuandu.

Lower middle right: An Ethiopian Orthodox icon showing St. George slaying the dragon, the crucifixion of Jesus, and the Virgin Mary, dating to the early 1900s.

Right: A Russian icon representing the Holy Trinity dating to around 1700 and created by Tikhon Filatiev.

One of my online friends just sent me this picture and they said they have a gift for me when we finally meet. Holy shit, I am so excited for the Herbert Hoover socks. 💕 We’re going into the Great Depression with this one, homies.
A hand holds up socks labeled “President Herbert Hoover” with a picture of his face. A quote is present: “Progress is born of cooperation in the community—not from government restraint.” Below is Herbert Hoover’s signature. Behind my friend’s hand is a scenic natural field backdrop and a park-service sign is labeled “Tall Grasses and Open Skies.”

I know the LinkedIn imaginary-dialogue-flex post is a literary tradition and genre of itself at this point, but I do wonder, from a job-hunt perspective of course, if your lacking skills as a writer are actually something you should flaunt in this way. Where’s the hook, the emotion, the pacing?
HR: “Your expected salary is 90,000?”

Candidate: “Yes. The job posting mentioned a salary range of 75,000-1,00,000, and based on my skills, experience, and the responsibilities of this role, I believe 90,000 is fair.”

HR: “We’re going to offer you 150,000 instead.”

Candidate: “Isn’t that above your budget?”

HR: “Yes. From your résumé and your interview, we realized that you’re overqualified for this role.”

Candidate: “I didn’t expect this, to be honest.”

HR: “We want to benefit from and learn more from your experience and qualifications.”

Candidate: “Well, I thought you were going to reject me because I’m overqualified.”

HR: “No. The manager said we can’t afford to lose you to our rivals.”

Candidate: “I never thought I would come across this type of interview.”

HR: “Here is your offer. You should report on Monday!”

etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/section5/tr5... So there’s this Ur III Dynasty Sumerian (21st century BC) poem called the Debate Between the Hoe and the Plow and it’s these two farming tools going off on each other about who’s better until the god Enlil himself favors the hoe. Straight fire.
O the Hoe, the Hoe, the Hoe, tied together with thongs; the Hoe, made from poplar, with a tooth of ash; the Hoe, made from tamarisk, with a tooth of sea-thorn; the Hoe, double-toothed, four-toothed; the Hoe, child of the poor, ….. bereft even of a loin-cloth (?) — the Hoe started a quarrel ….. with the Plough.

There’s a Prehistoric Kingdom achievement called Noah’s Park that requires having 2 of every animal species but I’m encouraging completionists to have 14 Megaloceros (kosher animal) and similar numbers of Yi, Archaeopteryx, and Microraptor (probably halakhically birds) as Noah was commanded.
Genesis 7:2-3 NRSVUE:

Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and its mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and its mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and female, to keep their kind alive on the face of all the earth.

Happy Bisexual Visibility Day to the best to ever do it, Alexander the Great. Depicted is the Stag Hunt Mosaic from a wealthy house in Pella, capital of ancient Macedon, around 300 BC. Many scholars think Alexander is on the right and his bodyguard and possible lover Hephaestion on the left.
Two naked muscular men in capes hunt a stag. The possible Alexander is on the right holding an antler with one hand while holding a sword in the other to dispatch the creature while the possible Hephaestion is on the left wielding a double-headed ax, which may reference his namesake Hephaestus. If this identification is correct, the dog attacking the stag may be Peritas.

I just finished reading After 1177 B.C. by Eric Cline, which follows up on his previous book with a discussion of how civilizations fared, recovered, and were replaced in the early Iron Age of the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean. Solidly recommend and it does well to dispel the “Dark Age.”
