The Alt National Park Service exploded in popularity after the 2024 election, and their cryptic, mysterious "code number" posts were a big part of their rise. In the aftermath of the election, people were desperate for hope, and AltNPS was ready to exploit that desperation 🧵:

Alt National Park Service: Seventeen. Three. Twenty-eight. Thirty-six. Eleven.

During the spring of 2025, AltNPS posted dozens of random numbers, with the implication that the numbers were a secret means of communication with other coalition members. But AltNPS never outright claimed this; in fact, they went out of their way to avoid explaining the numbers, ever.

As far as I know, AltNPS has addressed the numbers exactly once, in April 2025. They said they "couldn't explain everything," claimed they were "targeted" for posting the numbers, and then spouted something about cell-site simulators and called it a day. They never mentioned the numbers again.

Alt National Park Service: We’re often targeted for the numbers we post online. No, we can’t explain everything—sorry! But here’s what we can tell you: cell-site simulators are real. These devices mimic legitimate cell towers to intercept communications.

The numbers would continue through the summer before abruptly stopping. But the cryptic posts continued, and the audience was fully bought in. Followers speculated about the codes, and tried to read the tea leaves. Was it a warning? A coded message about a drone attack?

A Bluesky post from AltNPS, which reads, “Not all echoes are meant to return. The lights flicker not from power loss, but memory. When the clock chimes out of rhythm and the sky hums a little too low, you’ll understand what wasn’t written. Some birds don’t migrate—they vanish.” A commenter, whose name is redacted, replies: “This seems like a coded message. And, probably a warning. I'm thinking a mass sweep ( kidnapping ) is about to occur, maybe on that 4-20 date of rumor when most are enjoying the holiday? Sky humming too low sounds like military aircraft arriving unannounced across the country? Vanish is the message?” A second commenter, whose name is also redacted, replies: “Sky humming seems like drones.”

Followers actively discouraged each other from asking what the numbers and other mystery posts were all about. After all, it's for the coalition. It's not meant for us to know. Don't talk about Fight Club. The comment section quickly became a self-reinforcing LARP, no dissent allowed.

Commenter A: "?"

Commenter B: "Don't worry about it. The people who need to see it know what it means. No, I'm not one of them."

Commenter A: "It's code for feds? I was a civil servant. Hoping the current feds came up with a way to manage and survive."

Commenter B: "It's none of our fucking business is what it is. Don't. Worry. About. It. It's not for us."

By April of this year, AltNPS seemed to have mostly moved on from this. They largely just reposted news headlines and stole the work of journalists, like usual. Much simpler to just scrape the bottom of the barrel than to actually pretend to be a spy.

But eventually, the Alt National Park Service would go right back to its old tricks. Maybe engagement had fallen off, or maybe they just missed the thrill of the LARP. Either way, the audience was here for it. They wanted the kayfabe. They wanted to believe.

AltNPS's roleplaying has gone to extremely silly and self-aggrandizing places, and yes, it's fun to laugh at them. But I can laugh all I want, and it won't change the fact that millions of people believe that a gang of park rangers is fighting a life-or-death battle for freedom.

youtu.be/TlEVQ8AlPno An immigration vigil, held every Friday at 96th Street and Broadway by @riseandresist.bsky.social, where they read the names of those murdered by ICE and CBP. I would suggest, if you’re in the area, to attend one of these so you understand the human cost a little more.
