Every future imagined by a tech company is worse than the previous iteration…or something like that.

The real outcomes of the Tim Cook era at Apple have been moving the manufacturing base to China, flattery to far-right white nationalists (inc. Trump), creepily surveilling the user base and the nickle and diming of end users with subscriptions, GenAI and ads everywhere

The thing about the “no, you don’t understand AI could be used for good people” is that they're constantly yelling at the people pointing out the harm happening now, and I don’t see a ton being done to make this hypothetical good come to fruition.

It's a real bummer to have to constantly evaluate things from the perspective of the worst things they can be used to do, knowing they will be legally allowed and usually made to do that

The ways the people behind it are trying to infiltrate every aspect of our lives, I think most people are better off not using any of it. Most people aren't coders. Most people shouldn't offload their thinking.

I think it is far, far worse and more damaging to pay Elon or Anthropic than to have incorrect views on AI. Promoting Claude as a tool does more damage than people whose understanding of capabilities are out of date.

Irony is already dead. This is just overkill.
What I did find in Dracula, though, was the newly launched Character Guide feature, which tracks the speaking character in real time and offers an information card with details about the performer playing the role. It’s all on the player page, minimizing distractions.

The character guide feature is now available for George Orwell’s 1984 and will be part of Audible’s upcoming original audiobook Exoplanet, written by Benjamin Percy and executive-produced by Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir. Audible plans to expand this feature to let listeners interact with the guide and ask questions as the story progresses.

Seto Kaiba is the anti-hero of the Japanese manga series Yu-Gi-Oh! — an intelligent and Machiavellian orphan who inherits a weapons empire and pivots it into virtual reality technology. He is also Luckey’s personal hero. When he was seven, Luckey became obsessed with one of the character’s lines: “You said tech has limits. Wrong.” (As Luckey puts it, Seto Kaiba then proceeds to “kick everyone’s ass using his incredible technology”.) “Sometimes I wonder, how much free will do I actually have over my life?” Luckey tells me, after animatedly recounting this scene. “Is it possible that I actually had no choice at any point but to pursue VR and weapons development?”
